πŸš€ Launching today - a new podcast: Predicting Startup Success πŸ‘‰

Why do some startups thrive while others fail, even when they appear to have all the right ingredients?

That question is being explored through conversations with some of the leading thinkers and practitioners in entrepreneurship, innovation and venture growth in a new podcast series from Cambridge Judge Business School and the TUM Chair of Strategy and Organization.

Across nine episodes, hosts Chris Coleridge, Isabell Welpe and Theresa Treffers are joined by an outstanding line-up of guests to examine whether it's really possible to identify the signals of startup success before the outcome becomes obvious.

The episodes feature:

πŸŽ™οΈ Episode 1: Matthew Grimes on hype, legitimacy and entrepreneurial success: Now available

πŸŽ™οΈ Episode 2: Ramana Nanda on why deep-tech ventures are among the hardest to evaluate: Now available

πŸŽ™οΈ Episode 3: Taylor Bench on scaling from university software to startup growth (November)

πŸŽ™οΈ Episode 4:Prof. Dr. Holger Patzelt on what startups reveal when things go wrong (December)

πŸŽ™οΈ Episode 5: Dr. David Cleevely on the role of entrepreneurial ecosystems (January)

πŸŽ™οΈ Episode 6: Prof. Dr. Nicola Breugst on what marriage research can teach us about co-founder relationships (February)

πŸŽ™οΈ Episode 7: Dr. Amir Sani on whether data can predict startup success (March)

πŸŽ™οΈ Episode 8: Prof. Dr. Reiner Braun on reading investor signals (April)

And a final episode in May, bringing together the key insights from across the series.

This isn't a podcast about "startup hacks" or guaranteed formulas for success - it's for founders, investors, innovation leaders, academics, policymakers and anyone curious about how decisions are made under uncertainty, what signals really matter, and why predicting success is often far more complex than we think.

πŸ’‘ One piece of advice for organisations facing change:

Don't start by asking, "What should we become next?"

Start by asking, "What are we already exceptionally good at?"

New research from #CambridgeJudge suggests that successful reinvention often comes from repurposing existing strengths, rather than abandoning the past and starting over.

Fujifilm didn't succeed by forgetting everything it knew. Microsoft didn't reinvent itself by throwing away its expertise. Instead, they identified capabilities that others couldn't easily replicate and applied them in new ways.

It's a powerful reminder that your next opportunity may not come from chasing the latest trend.

It may come from seeing an existing strength through a different lens.

A useful exercise:

If your current products, services or business model disappeared tomorrow, what capability would still make your organisation valuable?

The answer might reveal your next chapter.

One theme kept resurfacing at the Women’s Leadership Conference on Saturday: as AI reshapes how we work, the qualities that matter most are becoming increasingly human. Critical thinking, judgment, courage, relationship-building. The ability to challenge assumptions and create opportunities for others.

There were so many powerful insights throughout the day, from discussions on inclusive leadership and allyship to the risks and opportunities of AI.

Speakers emphasised that representation alone isn't enough. Real progress comes when diverse voices are not only present, but have influence, agency and the ability to shape outcomes.

We were challenged to think about how we use the time AI creates. Do we simply drive efficiency, or do we reinvest that time in coaching, learning, mentoring and developing future leaders?

The biggest takeaway perhaps: technology may change the tools we use, but it doesn't reduce the need for human connection, curiosity and thoughtful leadership. If anything, it makes them more important.

Thank you to everyone who shared their expertise, experiences and honesty throughout the day, particularly Dame Menna Rawlings, Pinky Lilani, Alexandra Brintrup, Stella Pachidi, Curlene Simone Larsson, Maria Minaricova, Lee Chambers, Sulaiman Durrani, Anna Carolina Ottoni, Victoria Higgins, Julie Zhou and Jane Hamilton. And, of course, to Feryal Erhun, Tracey Horn and the whole team who continue to build such a valuable community.

$11 million - one of the biggest #AI fitness funding rounds in Europe this year.

Congrats to Cambridge Judge entrepreneurship alumnus Varun Bhanot who has secured new funding for his company MAGIC AI as it expands across the United States.

The round follows a remarkable run for the business: a King's Award for Enterprise, recognition as one of @TIME's Best Inventions, and more than 500,000 AI-guided workouts completed on its platform.

It's also a sign of where AI is heading. As software becomes easier to build, investors are increasingly backing businesses that combine AI with proprietary data, physical products and experiences that are harder to replicate.

A strong next chapter for MAGIC AI. πŸ‘

You don't have to build your business alone.

Many aspiring entrepreneurs believe they need to figure out every challenge themselves. In reality, successful founders know where to find support, insight and expertise when they need it.

From evaluating opportunities to building teams and gaining traction, entrepreneurship is a skill set that can be developed.

The Cambridge MSt in Entrepreneurship is designed to help founders do exactly that, through practical learning, one-to-one mentorship and a powerful entrepreneurial network.

Find out what you'll actually learn. Link in bio.

A front-row seat to the future of tech - this week, #CambridgeJudge alumni had the opportunity to step inside two of the world's most influential #tech companies @Meta and @Google, where our closing 'CJBS Connects' events were hosted in London.

At Meta, alumni heard from Alex Schultz, Meta's Chief Data Officer, on leadership, innovation, digital transformation, and his journey from Cambridge to one of the world's largest technology companies.

Later in the evening, at Google London, Paola Olivari (MBA 2007), Director of #Data Analytics & #AI, hosted a thought-provoking discussion on the AI revolution, exploring how advances in data and artificial intelligence are reshaping industries and creating new opportunities for organisations worldwide.

It was so valuable to hear from Cambridge #alumni at the forefront of technological change and to be reminded of how the Cambridge network continues to open doors, fosters connections and create impact around the world.

A huge thank you to Alex, Paola and everyone who helped make both events possible, and to everyone who joined the conversations and brought such thoughtful questions and insights.

"I came in expecting frameworks. What I got was a week of uncomfortable questions."

One week into the Cambridge MBA, Tanya was already finding lessons beyond the classroom.

From leadership sessions with @goustocooking founder Timo Boldt, where she reflected on the idea that "ambition alone is noise, ideas alone are cheap, people are the multiplier", to discussions on #sustainability with Professor Jennifer Howard-Grenville, one theme kept emerging: meaningful change is rarely straightforward.

Among the ideas that stayed with her were:

πŸ’‘ Leadership is about turning ambition, ideas and people into something that matters.

🌍 We are living through a "mid-transition", where old and new systems exist side by side, from energy to transportation.

πŸ”¬ At Cambridge Tech Week, innovations in healthcare and AI demonstrated how quickly technology is redefining what's possible.

🀝 One networking insight stood out: "Stop introducing yourself with your job title. Lead with a verb instead."

πŸ“ˆ And from the world of venture capital came a reminder that true innovation isn't about being slightly better, but creating value people can't ignore.

Reflecting on her first week, she writes:

"Everyone warns you the MBA is a fire hose. Nobody mentions how quickly you stop wanting it turned down."

Good luck @__tanya_agarwal__ - we'll be following your journey. 🌟

Thank you colleagues at Meta for hosting us today in London HQ! It was an absolute pleasure to be in conversation with fellow University of Cambridge alumnus Alex Schultz, Chief Data Officer at Meta (formerly Chief Marketing Officer) and one of only two Meta CXOs working outside of the United States.

We talked about:

🎯 Alex's journey from #Cambridge to #SiliconValley, reflecting on his career path from student to senior leader at #Meta.

🎯 Potential existential #threats to humanity, including #AI, and the lessons from Martin Rees (King's College, Cambridge and Trinity College Cambridge) 20+ years ago about these topics, which are so fashionable now!

🎯 About the role of Cambridge in the development of #quantum, and the crucial role Hermann Hauser (King's College, Cambridge, Amadeus Capital Partners, Arm) played (starting 25 years ago) and still plays in this space.

🎯 and so much more!

Thank you Alex, I certainly learnt a lot both at the fireside chat and in our 1-2-1. πŸ™πŸΎ

Fun fact, Mark Zuckerberg once said: "Alex is one of a small handful of people that I can say without his work, our community would not have connected more than 2 billion people around the world."

Thanks also for the excellent questions from the audience, the best four questions got a signed copy of Alex's latest book: Click Here: The Art and Science of Digital Marketing and Advertising.

This event is part of #CJBS Connects in London celebrating our alumni working at some of the world’s leading technology companies. Thank you Bhavana Hindupur and Jennifer Hersch for organising. by @cambridgejudge
