Another day, another market; but I’ll never get tired of them! And I’ll never get used to people complimenting me on my desserts! 🙈

Thank you so much to @volitionteaco and @guildrow for putting together such an amazing event. We had an awesome turnout thanks in large part to your planning and organizing efforts!

What I love most about markets/pop-ups aside from meeting new people and introducing them to my desserts is getting to sell alongside other passionate and talented small business owners. It’s been so nice being able to meet in person the folks that I have been following on social media for the past two years and whose work I am a huge fan of.

I’m extremely grateful to be a part of this group of Chicagoland creators, artists, chefs, etc. and hope that all of you in our community will continue to come out and support us.

Adolescent Camelia never would have imagined or dreamed she could be a part of something like Manila Zoo. Growing up in a predominantly white neighborhood on the northwest side of Chicago, I struggled with my identity of being American-born and the daughter of Filipino immigrants. I never felt like I truly belonged and there were many instances when classmates made me feel “othered.” I didn’t know many other Filipino Americans with a similar background as me aside from my cousins.

One of the best things to come out of me starting Camelia Bakes is meeting other Filipino Americans who also had a yearning to be part of a community where they could relate with others. I will always be grateful for opportunities where I can unapologetically show my love and pride for Filipino cuisine, culture, and traditions.

If you weren’t able to experience Manila Zoo this past weekend, please be sure to follow all of the amazing organizations and businesses listed below so you’re in the know of everything they’re doing. Please continue to show up and support us as we continue to bring visibility and recognition to the Filipino community.

Hullo hullo! I’d like to welcome everyone who just recently started following Camelia Bakes and reintroduce myself.

👩🏻‍🍳🍰🥐
I’m Camelia Rodriguez Camara; a second generation Filipina American pastry chef born and raised in Chicago. I started Camelia Bakes in 2017 after deciding to leave my career as a copywriter. It’s been an amazing last five years of learning and growing and I’m super excited for what the future holds!

At the core of Camelia Bakes is highlighting and celebrating Filipino cuisine/flavors and culture. The flavors I incorporate into my desserts are ones that I grew up enjoying and I want to share them with as many people as I can.

✨✨✨
It is also important for me to utilize my small business as a tool to give back. I don’t aspire to become filthy rich. As long as I can provide the necessities for myself and my family, I will give within my means to organizations that are helping the less fortunate and marginalized communities in Chicago and in the Philippines.

This week marks 9 years since I launched Camelia Bakes (official anniversary date is this Friday 3/27). 💕

I can’t believe that I’ve been baking, creating, and sharing my Filipino culture as Camelia Bakes for 9 whole years. I’m feeling extremely grateful and maybe a little emotional too. 🥹

What started as a simple dream has grown into something I’m incredibly proud of and your support has been a huge part of that. Every order and compliment has meant the world to me.
