THE LOST STORIES EP 04 : THE FIRST PUBLIC LIBRARY OF ALIGARH

Assist by @aditya_______kashyap

It may come as a surprise that Aligarh’s first public library took not one or two, but fourteen years to complete. The foundation of this magnificent, fort-like building was laid in 1889, and although construction was expected to finish by 1902, its intricate architecture and grand design delayed completion until 1904. Built by the Bharat Varsh National Association Trust, the library was established to promote the Hindi language and literary culture in the city. It was originally named after Sir Alfred Comyn Lyall, but following India’s independence in 1947, it was renamed in honor of Madan Mohan Malaviya. During its heyday, the library subscribed to international newspapers such as The Morning Post of London, and residents visited regularly to read about major world events, including the Russo-Japanese War. Today, however, this historic institution is facing difficult times. As one of Aligarh’s most significant cultural landmarks, it represents an important part of the city’s heritage and deserves greater attention and preservation.

“Firozabad ki Chudiyaan”

Firozabad’s bangles are more than just pieces of glass; they are the result of generations of craftsmanship and the hard work of thousands of artisans. The process begins by melting raw materials such as silica sand and soda ash in furnaces at extremely high temperatures. The molten glass is then shaped into thin tubes, which are heated and carefully bent into circular bangles. With years of experience and remarkable precision, artisans give each bangle its shape. The bangles are then decorated with vibrant colours, intricate patterns, and sparkling embellishments. Finally, they are cooled, inspected, sorted by size and design, and prepared for the market. Every bangle that emerges from Firozabad’s furnaces carries not just the beauty of glass but also the stories of the skilled hands behind it. This is why Firozabad is famously known as “Suhag Nagari,” the city of bangles. taken in Firozabad Uttar Pardesh by @camerabackpacker

Is Vinyl Records Still relevant ?

Some stories are not just about music; they are about preserving a piece of time. Shah Music Co., a name associated with Delhi’s old music culture, has been keeping the world of vinyl records alive since the 1930s. Their shop in Daryaganj, Delhi, has witnessed generations of music lovers walk in, searching for melodies that once played on gramophones and turntables. In an age of streaming and instant downloads, Shah Music Co. continues to hold on to the warmth, crackle, and nostalgia of physical records. Each vinyl is more than just a recording—it carries a memory, an era, and a story. And perhaps that is what makes this little piece of Delhi’s musical history so special: while the world moved on, they chose to keep the music spinning. by @camerabackpacker

“Phool Patti Ka Kaam” Of Aligarh ….

Assist by @aditya_______kashyap
In frame : @bendthetrendwithphoolpatti

Phool Patti ka Kaam, also known as applique work, is a traditional craft found in the old lanes of Aligarh. The craft involves carefully cutting, shaping and stitching small pieces of fabric into delicate floral and geometric patterns, which are then appliquéd onto garments and textiles. For generations, this work has often been done by women at home, turning everyday spaces into small workshops of creativity and patience. Each motif is made by hand, requiring precision and countless hours of detailed stitching. Today, while machine-made designs and changing lifestyles have affected the craft, Phool Patti continues to survive through the artisans who keep this quiet, beautiful tradition alive. taken in Aligarh by @camerabackpacker

For a long time, women have been doing this work from their homes, passing the skill from one generation to another. One of the India’s coolest collection of Vintage Typewriters @mrtypewriter.utc

Video assist : @aditya_______kashyap

This is the story of Rajesh Uncle, a man who has kept the world of typewriters alive in an age of computers and smartphones. He is believed to be among the last people in India who still sells, repairs, and works with typewriters. While most people today may see a typewriter as a piece of history, for Rajesh Uncle, it is still a machine that deserves to be understood, repaired, and used. His small shop is not just a place where old typewriters are fixed, it is a reminder of a time when every word was typed by hand, one key at a time.

On the occasion of Janmashtami, this is what Vrindavan felt like…🦚

Video assist @aditya_______kashyap

Every city has a soul, and Vrindavan is a city you understand by walking through its narrow lanes, hearing “Radhe Radhe” at every turn, tasting its kachoris and chai, and experiencing the chaos of monkeys alongside the calm of its temples. As the city prepares to celebrate Shri Krishna’s 5,253rd Janmashtami, Vrindavan comes alive in a way that is difficult to explain. But perhaps its true essence is found at Keshi Ghat, where the Yamuna flows quietly during the evening aarti, and the noise of the city slowly fades into the distant sound of a flute. That silence is where you truly feel the soul of Braj.
