What in a Thorium?!?

Whilst designing lenses, designers usually prefer to incorporate glass with a high refractive index in the lens design. This method permits to produce lenses with a lower surface curvature leading to thinner and more lightweight elements in the optical designs. However, lenses with a high refractive index may lead to a high dispersion. Dispersion causes chromatic aberrations and no one likes that. Do you? So let's say hello to the solution: thoriated glass. By adding thorium dioxide, lens elements with a high refractive index and a low dispersion can be manufactured.

Thoriated glass has often been used in the “faster” and more premium consumer lenses up to the 1980s. Some lenses can contain up to 30% of thorium dioxide by mass. Over the years, the self-irradiation of the lens leads to darkening or "yellowing" of the thoriated lens element which results in colour shifts but also reduces the light transmission (up to 1 stop).

Exposing these thoriated elements to ultraviolet radiation clears them up significantly. However, most methods usually require an exposure of a few days or even weeks to see a significant improvement. To do it properly the lens needs to be disassembled and only the thoriated elements need to be exposed to UV light. Playing with UV radiation itself is obviously not without dangers because there are different types of UV light based on their wavelengths. It goes without saying that these rays can be very hazardous and can permanently damage human eyes, even at a very short exposure.

We recently obtained a professional lab grade UV unit which allows us to safely expose the elements to UV radiation. These units use very strong UV lamps which reach temperatures up to 900 °C. Do not worry, there are enough fans to keep the lamp cool, although it sounds as if you’re sitting next to an airplane. We've already managed to significantly improve certain thoriated lens elements in a relatively short timeframe. Please contact us and we'll be happy to help you.

We'll address the radiation concerns associated with thoriated lenses in a future post.

The Belgian coast is a nice place to spend your summer months. However, it's not the nicest place for your cameras and lenses. One of our clients contacted us because he was hit by a wave while using his Mamiya 7. Refreshing for a person, but less so for a camera.

The best course of action in a situation like this is to pack up your things and head straight to the closest camera service location, because every second counts. When we received the camera, less than 24 hours had passed since the splash, and this was already enough to severely corrode the affected parts. We managed to clean everything out, and we were lucky that the electronic components and the main board could be saved...

If you plan to take your equipment to the coast, try to keep it away from the water. Also keep in mind that even if you don't see any water, fine sea spray and nasty beach sand will get into your equipment.

We've published an article about the Belgian coast (the fun part of it) in our Aberration Magazine issue which you can find on our website.

Lack of spare parts can make certain repairs challenging. This Mamiya 7II advance shaft was damaged, or rather the ratchet pawl which grabs onto the film advance gear stack in order to advance the frame. As you can see on the first photo the tip of the pawl is chewed up, which prevents it from locking the gears in place. It's a very special advance shaft assembly because it communicates with the multi exposure mechanism inside the camera. When you slide the multi exposure button to the side it pushes the pawl away, allowing you to charge the shutter without advancing the film. It's not possible to remove the pawl and replace it because it would require some very specific tooling as well as the means to manufacture a new pawl.

Upon checking our stock, we no longer had these particular parts available. However, what we did have in stock, were the advance shaft assemblies for the Mamiya 7 cameras. Since there is no multi exposure mechanism in the Mamiya 7, these parts are slightly different though. We knew that it might work to replace the part with this one. However, we also knew it would require some extra modifications and other parts because there are some significant differences.

In the end, the Mamiya 7II advance assembly was repaired using parts from Mamiya 7II, Mamiya 7 and Mamiya 6. We had to remove the multi exposure mechanism to make everything work. Still, it was either that or a non-working Mamiya body. The result was a properly functioning (but a little Frankenstein like) advance assembly.

This is the main reason why some repairs really require years of experience and a very good understanding of the system (or multiple systems in this case). Albeit, challenging repairs are what makes us love our job.

You're looking at a snapped piece of a Mamiya 645 2nd generation (Super, Pro, Pro TL) mirror stop, stuck inside the mirror assembly, jamming the camera body. The owner was lucky because in a lot of cases these get stuck inside the curtains or the shutter assembly causing catastrophic damage, which requires a complete replacement of the shutter assembly. We can assure you that almost every 2nd generation Mamiya 645 needs its mirror stop be replaced and calibrated. It's not a design issue as some users like to point out. Mamiya just never expected these cameras to last that long... The plastic becomes brittle with age and starts to crack (even when barely used). In any case, these bodies also need an extensive service in order to get the shutter speeds back into factory specs. While we're at it we can also replace some electronic components which also degrade with age.

Let's also take some time to appreciate the precision of the quartz oscillator used on the mainboard which puts out very precise and stable shutter speeds. An improvement over the first generation Mamiya 645 bodies, except for the introduction of plastic outer parts.

When a Pentax 67 tries to be a Nikonos... it will fail. This Pentax 67 body was shipped to us because it stopped working. This is not uncommon for an old camera, especially if it never has been serviced. Upon the first inspection, we noticed that the counter was jammed and that's usually a pretty bad sign. After a partial disassembly, we also noticed a layer of rust on the internal parts. The owner explained to us that he took the camera to the beach and was surpised by an incoming wave. He wiped off the seawater stains and went on and forgot about it. However, we know that seawater can be very nasty and when it gets inside the mechanism, even if it's just some tiny droplets from the air, it tends to wreak havoc... This particular camera required an extensive rebuild in order to remove all the rust and replace parts that were damaged beyond repair.

Despite the beautiful scenery, we usually don't advise to take your photographic equipment to the beach unless you're using some kind of protective equipment and take great care of cleaning our cameras and lenses afterwards. This applies to films cameras as well as modern digital cameras. Seawater is highly corrosive and degrades metal and plastic parts as well as electronic components. However, if this is part of your job, you'll have to accept that your equipment will need to be replaced more often.

Camera Revival proudly presents its first publication: Aberration Magazine.

Aberration Magazine is an ode to the fascinating world of film cameras, lenses and traveling. In our camera and lens repair workshop we repair cameras and lenses on a daily basis in order to let our customers enjoy carefree work and travelling experiences. Over the years, the stories of the people we have met were so captivating that we had to do something with them. Hence, we decided to bundle some of those stories in a magazine format.

In our first issue, you certainly won’t find AI-generated photos and articles, but rather lots of enthusiastic stories of real people, magical real-life locations, surprising vintage cameras, delicious dishes… and so much more. Besides, an exclusive photo reportage of two talented Omani photographers is featured in our first issue.

Aberration Magazine is available for digital purchase on https://camerarevival.com/product/aberration-magazine-no-1/

A few months ago we received a call from the only remaining working official Hasselblad tech in the Netherlands. Back in the days he worked at the official Hasselblad repair center, received all the trainings from Hasselblad, worked on the digital Hasselblad cameras and witnessed all the developments throughout the decades. His knowledge of the Hasselblad system is truly astonishing. Recently, he decided to retire fully and was searching for a successor to continue his work.

We have the great honour to continue the Hasselblad repairs with his blessing. We already had some factory tooling and parts which we managed to aquire throughout the years. However, the large influx of these additional spare parts, specialised lens and camera factory tools, manuals and equipment will allow our workshop to keep growing and to keep the Hasselblad brand alive for much longer.
