what’s with all the confetti?

not in short: the older I get, the more I long to connect to my heritage. if you’ve known me in any capacity longer than probably a week, we’ve probably had a convo about the feeling of being lost on the way to “belonging.” what is it like to operate in this world/industry within the identities we’ve been told to carry or not carry.
I’ve been itching to make a piece about my roots. the lack of things passed on through generations for whatever reason or another. can i fill in the gaps with who i am now? am i allowed to? who tells me i cant? do the sly jokes and comments from people justify me sacrificing one half of myself for another? and all of this to appease…. who? would my ancestors be proud of me? or view me as the no sabo kid. so the opportunity of @novellasshowcase came up and i knew it was time to try.
we sat on the rehearsal floor for the first hour just talking. conversations continued through the week. conversations that I’ve needed and still need more of. the process became more important to me than the product… but that’s how I’ve been operating as of late. this piece and this experience has meant so much to me. Alzheimer’s can take memories away. colonialism. assimilation. benchmarks. simply the sands of time. but maybe with all of these things, we can still return to things that the body can never un-remember. and maybe they’re set free again in a new/old way? Idk yall, buy me a coffee and ill sit down and give you an in depth explanation of the piece if you want it hahahaaaaa BUT

This felt like the beginnings of a more accepting self. and equally as important: the beginnings of a community I’ve been too scared to reach out to.

It deadass reminded me of how it felt to just not care about anything else in the WORLD; like when we all found dance for the first time. Radical joy during these scary times is also rebellion. Dance was DANCE for me today….. sooooooo grateful. Yall go get in gigis class cause hello???!

a bit of a mish mosh of a post but hear me out: I went to @tatdancing rather curious how I was gonna hold up physically. although not anything *too* catastrophic, two knee surgeries at the end of last year really challenged my mental and my ‘why’

bruh, just walking in my house was a struggle let alone pushing through dance. 18+ months of pt and I was exhausted and needed to regroup. blah blah you get it. been suuuuper reflective and SUUUUUPER grateful to even be able to dance as much as I did last week. crazy that it was back at the old stomping grounds 😭 ‘success’ is not linear (whatever success is lol) growth is painful and uncomfortable but MAMASSSS im having an absolute ball!! you are always where you’re meant to be at the times you are meant to be there

Shoutout to everyone who made this last week so so fun and for the endless laughter 🤭 @bgirltynee @sloaneashlyn_ @mikayladelrio @sammm.peters @jsodwaco @tatdancing and literally so many more
