Now shipping! Made of Smokeless Fire by Camille Farrah Lenain

An intimate portrait of queer Muslim life in France, where faith and desire intersect within conditions of erasure.

Camille Farrah Lenain’s Made of Smokeless Fire weaves the personal and the political to explore the layered nature of LGBTQ+ identity as it unfolds in the shadow of dislocation, erasure, and marginalisation. Set in France, home to one of the largest Muslim populations in Europe, and marked by pervasive Islamophobia in which queer Muslim lives are often rendered invisible, Lenain counters erasure through a deeply attentive and relational photographic approach.

The work began as testimony and homage in the wake of the death of her uncle Farid who grew up gay in a Muslim Algerian family, opening outward from personal loss into a collective portrait of community. The individuals pictured navigate complex terrain, some distanced from family, others reinterpreting cultural inheritance, many forging networks of safety and affirmation, as they negotiate life within overlapping pressures of Islamophobia and queerphobia. by @camille.lenain

Camille Farrah Lenain @camille.lenain here, taking over Women Photograph’s Instagram.

Today I’m sharing the story of how Made Of Smokeless Fire began. My uncle Farid was a pillar in our family, an invisible thread connecting my mother, my aunts and many cousins. We lost him in 2013, and with him went so many conversations we never had. Years later, I found myself bubbling with questions for him.

Farid, did you believe in Allah? Did you ever come out to your parents? What did it feel like in your body when you learned you had AIDS? Did you ever find your place, being queer and Arab in France?

I never got to ask him.

Those unanswered questions became the starting point of Made Of Smokeless Fire. They led me to meet queer Muslim people across France whose stories, generosity, and trust helped me find my way back to Farid, and to parts of myself I was still discovering.

The portraits you see in these slides and pages are just a few of the extraordinary people I’ve had the privilege of meeting over the past six years. Tomorrow, I’ll share more about these encounters and how they shaped both the photographs and the project itself.

The book is published by @jointsloose by @camille.lenain

Algerian-French photographer @camille.lenain’s book, Made of Smokeless Fire, brings together tender and moving photographs of the French Muslim LGBTQI+ community. The work is dedicated to loved ones she has lost, primarily her uncle Farid and friend Lamine.

For Lenain, the main message of the work is love. She says, ā€˜Love for God. Love for the people you were told you weren't allowed to love. Love for yourself. And I think it's about survival. Love as survival.’

Made of Smokeless Fire is published by @jointsloose and available to buy now.

A glimpse into the making of Yasmin’s portrait šŸ”„

After sharing stories for hours in her Paris flat, we played with mirrors, smoke, fabric, reflections… This photograph emerged from that exchange, a magical 1/125th of a second, holding an entire afternoon. Thank you my dear @yasmineadala for your generosity and William for documenting this moment.

Made Of Smokeless Fire is out and now available via @jointsloose - if you’re in Paris, save the date for our July 2nd launch at @lebalbooks / @le_bal šŸ’˜ More events and glimpses into the making of the book soon. <3

MADE OF SMOKELESS FIRE: Camille Farrah Lenain holds complexity and offers testimony in her layered and affirming portrait of queer Muslim life in France, forthcoming in June.

@camille.lenain’s debut publication weaves personal experience and political reality into a nuanced account of how LGBTQ+ identity unfolds in the shadow of dislocation, marginalisation and erasure, within a country where the complexities of Muslim lives are often flattened or made invisible.

Bathed in lush Mediterranean light and attuned to gestures of closeness, Lenain’s subjects articulate identity through an intimate register that embraces quiet confidence, contemplation and cultural in-betweenness; meanwhile, her own attentive eye seeks tender dislocation in lush fragments of life, nature and domesticity, giving a quietly radical and attentive voice to groups and lives that have often remained silenced or unspoken.
