The longevity industry has become extraordinarily adept at taking perfectly understandable human anxieties—the fear of decline, frailty, disease and lost independence—and wrapping them in increasingly sophisticated language: optimisation, biohacking, metabolic health, hormonal balance, recovery, cellular rejuvenation.

And beneath it all sits the implication that somewhere, just beyond the next protocol, there is a superior version of ageing waiting to be purchased.

But there is a rather important distinction between changing something measurable and changing something that actually matters.

A biomarker moving in the desired direction is not the same thing as preventing disease. Improving body composition is not the same thing as extending life. Experiencing a transient hormonal response is not evidence that we have discovered a longevity mechanism.

The fundamentals are not glamorous. They are simply difficult to sell. This is not an argument against medicine, hormone therapy, supplementation or emerging science. It is an argument for intellectual honesty.

If someone has symptoms, treat the symptoms. If someone has a deficiency, address the deficiency. If someone has a clinical indication, investigate and treat it appropriately. But do not quietly slide from “this changes X” to “therefore this will help you live longer.”

Those are very different claims—and they require very different standards of evidence.

Perhaps the more meaningful question isn’t: “How do I live forever?”

Perhaps it is: “How do I remain strong, capable, independent and connected for as many of my years as possible?”

There is something rather liberating about discovering that the foundations of a long, capable life may not require us to become increasingly obsessed with optimisation.

Perhaps we simply need to become better at doing the obvious things consistently.

Before you purchase the next “longevity” solution, ask one beautifully inconvenient question: What, exactly, has been demonstrated in humans—and what has merely been marketed exceptionally well?

“Evidence-based” has become almost synonymous with “correct”.

But evidence is not a magic stamp of approval.

A study can be high quality and still have limited applicability to the person standing in front of you.

A statistically significant result doesn’t automatically mean a meaningful real-world outcome.

And an intervention being effective under controlled conditions doesn’t automatically make it the most practical, sustainable or appropriate option in everyday life.

This isn’t an argument against science.

Quite the opposite.

It’s an argument for thinking scientifically.

That means understanding the evidence, questioning its limitations, considering the context, and then integrating it with experience and real-world outcomes.

The best decisions rarely come from blindly following a study.

They come from knowing what the evidence says, what it doesn’t say, and how confidently you can apply it.

Evidence should inform judgement — not replace it.

Do you think “evidence-based” is sometimes used as a conversation-stopper rather than a starting point?

The Fitness Industry Has Confused Weight Loss With Health

Many people begin their health journey wanting to lose weight.
There’s nothing wrong with that.
But somewhere along the way, we need to expand the conversation.

Because health is so much more than body weight.

It’s your energy when you wake up.
Your ability to play with your children.
Your confidence.
Your resilience.
Your mobility.
Your mental wellbeing.
Your future.

If your only measure of success is the number on the scale, you’ll miss countless signs that your health is improving.

The goal isn’t simply to weigh less.
The goal is to live more.

What’s one sign of progress you’ve noticed recently that has nothing to do with weight?

For women planning pregnancy or already expecting.

1 —
Pre-pregnancy training strengthens your heart, core, and pelvic floor — the foundation for a smoother pregnancy and recovery.
Women with higher pre-pregnancy fitness levels experience fewer complications and faster postpartum recovery.

2 —
Strength training isn’t just safe — it’s highly beneficial.
It helps maintain posture, reduce back and pelvic pain, and prepare your body for labor and the physical demands of motherhood.
ACOG recommends resistance training for most healthy pregnancies.

3 —
Core training should focus on stability and breath control, not crunches.
Learning to coordinate your diaphragm, core, and pelvic floor before pregnancy helps prevent issues like diastasis recti and incontinence later on.
Targeted core and pelvic floor work supports better outcomes postpartum.

4 —
Movement during pregnancy supports mood, energy, and metabolic health — and can even make labor easier.
Use the “talk test” to guide your intensity, and adapt as your body changes.
ACOG advises 150 minutes of moderate activity per week for most pregnant women.

5 —
Your body doesn’t need to “bounce back” — it deserves to rebuild.
Training before and during pregnancy helps your body recover stronger, not smaller.
Evidence: Maintaining strength through pregnancy improves postpartum function and mental well-being.

^^^
-Use periods of heavier loading ( ~75-85% 1RM) to target maximal strength, while integrating lighter loads (< 60% 1RM) for technique, speed, and volume work.

-Don’t just train quad dominance — incorporate hip‐dominant work (e.g., glute bridges, Romanian deadlifts, hip thrusts) as accessory movements for your heavy squat blocks.

-While technique and neural factors are critical, don’t ignore the structural side — increase muscle cross-section, improve thigh and hip musculature, and adapt your training to your individual anatomy (e.g., limb lengths, muscle volumes).

-Ensure you hit consistent legal or desired depth, prioritise form (bracing, bar path, hip/knee balance), and use regular testing with reliability in mind. Without consistent technique and depth, strength gains may be masked.

-Especially if you’re advanced, progress slows. Use benchmarks, track small increments, adjust programming (deloads, phases, accessory work) and avoid chasing huge immediate jumps. Consistency over time wins.

Squat strength is multi-factorial — load, anatomy, technique, patience.
Pick one tip you’ll apply this week, commit to it for a training block, and let the progress follow.

Research Updates from December 2025

1. Resistance Training Adaptations & Programming

Notable conclusions
• Human muscle hypertrophy appears driven primarily by fiber enlargement rather than hyperplasia, with current evidence not supporting meaningful hyperplasia in response to resistance training.
• Periodisation according to menstrual cycle phases lacks strong empirical support despite growing interest.

2. Psychological Health, Motivation & Mental Wellbeing

Notable conclusions
• Resistance training is an effective adjunct treatment for depression across populations.
• Training environments matter as much as programming variables for long-term engagement.

3. Nutrition, Supplementation & Recovery

Notable conclusions
• Supplements are best viewed as performance amplifiers, not substitutes for sound training and nutrition.
• Evidence supports targeted use rather than blanket supplementation.

4. Sex Differences, Physiology & Hormonal Responses

Notable conclusions
• Individualisation is critical; uniform prescriptions ignore meaningful physiological variability.
• Evidence for cycle-based programming remains insufficient.

5. Technology, AI & Practice Integration

Notable conclusions
• AI is best used as a support tool, not a decision-maker.

6. Broader Health & Behavioural Considerations
Key themes
• Restrictive dieting is linked to binge eating behaviours, reinforcing the need for flexible, psychologically informed nutrition approaches.
• Gut microbiota–exercise interactions are promising but currently limited by methodological inconsistency.

Overall Synthesis
Across this literature:
• Resistance training is a powerful tool for physical performance, mental health, and long-term wellbeing.
• Outcomes are shaped not only by load and volume, but by psychological context, recovery capacity, nutrition, and coaching approach.
• Evidence increasingly supports individualised, flexible, and human-centred models of training over rigid protocols.
• Emerging methods and supplements show promise, but require cautious, evidence-guided integration.

1. Looking back at the year
This year I found myself noticing that the biggest shift wasn’t in the number of clients I coached or the programmes I delivered — it was when I finally paused long enough to ask: What is my body actually telling me?
.
2. Looking ahead – Approach to the New Year
When we say ‘New Year, new me’, the pressure can feel real. My intention for 2026 is: less forcing, more invited
.
3. Well-being & daily life
Consistent moderate strength + recovery win over bursts of extreme. And in daily life, that means choosing the walk when I could have done the class; choosing sleep over the extra set; choosing community over isolation.
.
What I hope to bring into the next year inside the community is: more of that bridging of body + emotion + identity. Because movement isn’t just about physical; it’s about how we live in our bodies as humans who’ve done a lot and deserve a lot.”

5 Reasons You’ve “Failed” in the Gym So Far
(And why it’s not really failure.)
.
1.You’re chasing someone else’s goals
- Comparison steals progress. Set your goals — not Instagram’s.
.
2. You’re all-or-nothing
-If you can’t give 100%, you give 0.
Consistency > perfection. Always.
.
3. You’re not tracking real wins
-Not everything is about weight loss.
-Track energy, mood, strength, sleep. It all counts.
.
4. You ignore your body
-Training through pain ≠ toughness.
-Smart training means knowing when to rest.
.
5. You’re not having fun
-If it feels like punishment, it’s not sustainable.
-You need to want to show up.
.
You didn’t fail.
You just need a better strategy.

3 Reasons You’re Probably Not Lifting Heavy Enough
(And what it’s costing you.)
.
1.You’re not stimulating change
Light weights won’t build real strength or muscle.
You’ve got to challenge the system.
.
2.Your bones (and hormones) need it
Lifting heavy helps maintain bone density, muscle mass & healthy hormones — for every age.
.
3.Your brain loves it
Heavier training = better focus, sharper thinking, improved mood.
Mental gains > mirror gains.
.
You don’t need to be a powerlifter —
But you do need to lift like it matters.
Push yourself. Safely. Progressively. Smartly.
