Rookery Bay recently welcomed participants from Camp Able Marco @campablemarco for a day of exploration, discovery, and hands-on learning at the Environmental Learning Center.

Camp Able is a unique program that provides vacation experiences for individuals with diverse abilities while fostering a community built on compassion, inclusion, and unconditional acceptance. Centered on celebrating what each person can do, Camp Able encourages participants to try new experiences, build friendships, and create lasting memories in a supportive environment.

During their visit to Rookery Bay, campers explored the interactive exhibits, discovering the plants, animals, and habitats that make Southwest Florida's estuaries so unique. The group climbed aboard the Environmental Learning Center's boat exhibit, taking the captain's seat as they imagined navigating the Reserve's winding mangrove waterways. Outside, campers enjoyed the scenic view overlooking Henderson Creek, where they learned about the importance of estuaries as nursery habitats for countless fish, birds, and other wildlife.

Another favorite activity was comparing the skulls of an American alligator and an American crocodile. Campers learned how scientists can distinguish the two species by the shape of their snouts and discovered that South Florida is one of the few places in the world where both species naturally occur.

Throughout the visit, curiosity and excitement filled the Environmental Learning Center as campers asked questions, shared observations, and connected with the natural world. Rookery Bay was honored to host Camp Able Marco and looks forward to welcoming the campers back for more adventures in the future.
