The James Bay Missinaibi is the pinnacle experience of canoeing at Camp Bil-O-Wood. The trip covers nearly 350 miles of the Missinaibi and Moose Rivers, ending in the small village of Moosonee, situated at the base of the Hudson Bay. The trip takes two weeks. Pictured here is conjuring house falls, which requires a 1-mile portage.

It takes campers many years of practice getting comfortable in the woods and on the trail to reach the level of a James Bay canoe tripper. Congratulations to the 2025 crew 🇨🇦🏕️💪 taken in Missinaibi Provincial Park by @campbilowood

Camp Bil-O-Wood began in 1946 as a sports and traditional summer camp. Soon after, we started exploring the vast network of waterways and wilderness in Northern Ontario.

Today, we travel over 25 different routes ranging from 10-400 miles and 2 to 14 nights. Campers start on local lakes and work their way up to paddling more distant and more challenging lakes and rivers, culminating in the grand trip to Moosonee, Ontario via the Missinaibi or Groundhog Rivers.

There is no place on earth that offers the purity and abundance of waterways for campers to safely explore than in northern Ontario along the Voyager trails. 🏕️🛶🇨🇦 taken in Camp Bil-O-Wood by @campbilowood

Friday nights at spider rock: Where friendships deepen, stories are shared, traditions are passed on, and campers begin to understand what it means to be part of something bigger than themselves.

They may not remember exactly what was said, but they’ll always remember how it felt to sit with their friends around the campfire in a place that feels like home. 🇨🇦🏕️🛶 taken in Camp Bil-O-Wood by @campbilowood

Most communities form by chance or necessity. Camp is different. Camp is intentional. It is a community built with purpose, a little microcosm of what the world could be: a place where children feel safe, secure, connected, and free to grow into themselves.

Every aspect of camp life is thoughtfully designed to nurture emotional, social, and physical well-being, creating the kind of trust and belonging that allows children to truly thrive.

And when children feel safe, something remarkable happens. They become brave.

They take risks. They try things they never imagined they could do. They stretch beyond their comfort zones, knowing that if they stumble, their counselors, their friends, and their entire camp community will be there to catch them.

That’s the magic of camp.

We create the safety and belonging that give children the courage to discover just how capable they really are.🇨🇦🏕️🛶 taken in Camp Bil-O-Wood by @campbilowood

It is one of the few remaining places on earth where childhood still unfolds in the way the human brain is wired for.

Physical activity, relationships, challenge, adversity, curiosity, independence, interdependence, real-time problem solving and face-to-face interaction are the bread and butter of summer camp.

While the rest of the world is busy optimizing childhood for speed, efficiency, convenience, constant stimulation, easy distractions, summer camp continues to optimize children for the most important thing of all:

When the last canoe trip of the summer comes home and the tripping flag finally comes down, it is one of those moments that makes us stop.

Because that flag represents thousands of miles paddled, hundreds of nights beneath the Northern Ontario sky, and countless moments our campers will carry with them long after summer ends.

In just 56 days, they have paddled through wind and rain, navigated rapids, carried canoes across seemingly endless portages, battled mosquitoes, built fires with wet wood, cooked their own meals, and fallen asleep exhausted beneath the stars.

But the miles are only part of the story.

Out there, they learn to notice when someone else is struggling and pick up the heavier pack. They learn to wash the mess kit when they’re just as tired as everyone else. They learn that sometimes the rain doesn’t stop, the portage is longer than expected, and the only way forward is through.

They learn that they are stronger than they thought.

More capable than they knew.

And that some of the greatest moments of their lives can happen with no electricity, no screens, no conveniences, but with just a canoe, a few good friends, and an enormous wilderness around them.

So when that flag comes down, we aren’t simply celebrating where they went.

We’re celebrating who they became along the way.

Until the Rivers Run Dry. 🇨🇦🏕️🛶
