Mass Incarceration is one of the most expensive and degrading industries that has been set in place. It is indeed slavery, legalized through the 13th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution. At Constitution Day, professor Rebecca Beibel and Mercer County College has ensured that those who have lived experience were able to express themselves on this platform.
The system that fuels mass incarceration is motivated by greed, social and cultural control, and hatred for humanity. Slavery is gruesome and has always been the driving force of wealth for this nation. Instead of chattel slavery on plantations, slavery has transformed into prisons resembling concentration camps. The goal has not been rehabilitation or correction, it has been control and greed.
This reality can change. However it starts with those who are first fed up with the reality. The Truth is in front of our faces and it is not being hidden. It’s time to address this structure with the correct approach. Constitution Day was centered on making that approach.

On August 8th, 2022, there was a major turning point for me in my life. It was the first time that I allowed what was inside of me to be heard by those around me. This message was to people in my environment, enduring the same circumstances that I was enduring, who were struggling and experiencing hatred, oppression, harassment, belittlement, disrespect, discrimination, and racism.

What began as honest expression became a speech. The journey after this has been amazing, to say the least, and I have outgrown the lifestyle and mentality that I was stuck in for so long.

At Saturday’s Open Mic, “Words Hit Different Here,” I spoke this speech. As you listen to a portion of the speech, please try to envision who I was speaking to.

This was the day in our environment when Christians and Muslims began to be kind to each other and respect each other as human beings first. This made us stronger than we’ve ever been.

Please hear this speech. It is the first speech I ever wrote. 🤲🏾

When life is filled with burdens, we now know that when we make each other’s problems “our” problems, we can lean on each other, pour into each other, and become resourceful. There is no need to live or struggle alone when you have community.

The community came out to support, show love, give back, and invest in the community. Major salute to all who helped pour into the community. We’ve been denied help in many areas; however, we now know that together, we can achieve great things.

Major thanks to God, first and foremost. Major salute to all who donated. Major salute to all who came and supported. Major salute to our brothers who helped make this happen. Major salute to the Overcomers Intervention Unit, which is dedicated to being more active in the community. Major salute to Second Chance Mentoring, who went out of their way to pour into the youth and give back to the community. Major salute to Mt. Zion.

Divine missions have become, and are still becoming, reality. Personal missions are being fulfilled.

Accepting reality and Truth is the first stage of our growth. If we don’t accept reality and hold ourselves accountable, we will only continue to become worse. Nevertheless, it’s important that we hear the Truth so that we do not become consumed by lies. The youth—young men and women who are still figuring out their place in this world—should not be subjected to only lies, delusions, and deceptions. The youth should be poured into correctly, with power and words that contribute to their growth, not their demise.

What we see now is a flawed culture and an identity crisis for many people. The desire to be socially accepted has led people to neglect their true personalities and aspirations and conform to what society expects of us and labels us. What we see is evident: murder is praised, drug and alcohol abuse is praised, disrespecting the dead is praised, being sexually immoral is praised, and being deceitful, selfish, greedy, and materialistic is all praised. If people do not conform to these standards, they’re labeled “weird” and criticized simply for being misunderstood.

Why do we only gravitate toward what hurts us, both as individuals and as a collective? When does sincerity become a factor?

The decisions we’ve made and the experiences of our lives should not deter the youth from reaching their full potential. What we do and how we maneuver—it all impacts the youth. Why should the youth be subjected to what we refuse to overcome? Why should the youth have to pay for our decisions?

It stops with us the moment we decide it does.

This is where true growth and prosperity happen: after addressing what’s inside of us—the things that hinder us from reaching our fullest potential.

My journey as a personal trainer has been very rewarding 🤲🏾🏆. The rewards have triumphed what money cannot buy. Bonds have been built, connections have been made, and interactions that turn into memories have been created ☝🏾. Fighting has always been a part of my life, and I’ve always gravitated towards exercise. However, being able to use these abilities and gifts has been a gracious experience. In this greedy world, I’ve been blessed to build something that money can’t buy, and that is sincere connections with people. In a world where I may not be able to help or give to everyone financially, I know that coaching is a gift that I can give to anyone regardless of age, size, or ability. If there is no other way that I can help, I know that physical wellness is a way that I can help, and mental and emotional health follows after. Being able to give messages and enjoy challenges has made this experience very great; and I am looking forward to what the future holds.
Pouring into the community has been a goal of mine for years. Now that I am able to, even though I am seeking to do more shortly, it is a fulfilling experience. Money, though it’s necessary, has never been the primary motive. Building a foundation beyond what we can see has always been the motive and the goal.
Thanks to God first and foremost ✝️, because none of this would be possible without him. Also, major thanks to @coachmikegorillasquadba 🫡💪🏾🏆. He has overcome the harshest of circumstances too, and has still offered opportunities for me without hesitation, taking a chance. In due time, the foundation will be extremely firm 🫡💪🏾.
