ARE NIGERIAN UNIVERSITIES PREPARING STUDENTS FOR LIFE OR JUST EXAMS?

You can spend four or five years in a university, graduate with a good CGPA, and still have no idea what to do next.

And honestly, that should make us think.

For many Nigerian students, university is mainly about lectures, assignments, tests, exams and eventually getting that certificate.

But what happens after graduation?

Can you write a good CV? Handle a job interview? Manage your money? Communicate professionally? Build useful connections? Use practical skills that employers actually need?

These are things students often have to figure out on their own.

Of course, universities cannot teach students everything. Students also need to take responsibility for learning skills outside the classroom.

But should a student spend four years in university without getting enough exposure to the real world of work?

Maybe university education should be about more than passing exams.

A good degree matters, but so do skills, experience, confidence, creativity, communication and the ability to solve real problems.

Because graduation is not the end.

For many students, it is where the real journey begins.

So, here is the question:

Are Nigerian universities truly preparing students for life after school, or are we preparing them mainly to pass examinations?

The Federal University of Technology, Ikot Abasi (FUTIA) has announced the commencement of its 2026/2027 admission process.

Candidates who chose the University as their preferred institution, as well as other prospective applicants, are advised to regularly check their JAMB Central Admissions Processing System (CAPS) profiles to confirm their admission status and take the necessary steps where applicable.

The University urged candidates, parents and the public to obtain admission information only through official University channels and JAMB.

FUTIA also warned against fraudulent individuals requesting payment in exchange for admission.

All applicable fees and payments should be made only through the official University portal.

Candidates are advised to continue monitoring their JAMB CAPS for updates as the admission process progresses.

The Vice-Chancellor of Lagos State University (LASU), Professor Ayodeji Olawunmi Badejo, has unveiled an eight-pillar strategic vision aimed at building a more competitive, future-ready and locally relevant university.

Professor Badejo presented the vision on Friday, September 25, 2026, while addressing the Committee of Provosts, Deans and Directors (COPDD) at the Senate Chamber.

The vision focuses on:

📌 Academic excellence and quality assurance
📌 Research, innovation and global visibility
📌 Financial sustainability and resource mobilisation
📌 Infrastructure and digital transformation
📌 Staff welfare and industrial harmony
📌 Student welfare, mentorship and employability
📌 Governance, integrity and institutional visibility
📌 Community engagement and societal impact

For students, the administration says greater attention will be given to mentorship, employability initiatives and mental health support, alongside efforts to strengthen academic quality and entrepreneurship.

LASU also plans to expand the use of AI and digital tools, with at least one smart classroom expected in every faculty within the next year.

As part of her first 100 days in office, Professor Badejo announced plans for university-wide consultations across LASU’s campuses, faculties, schools, centres, institutes and directorates, as well as with staff and student unions.

The Vice-Chancellor called for collective responsibility and inclusive leadership, urging members of the university community to support the implementation of the new strategic vision. by @campusspotlightng

The management of Osun State Polytechnic, Iree has announced that HND graduates who were previously unable to participate in the NYSC mobilisation exercise because they obtained their ND through Part-Time programmes are now eligible for registration and mobilisation.

According to a directive from the NYSC, all affected graduates are required to report to the Directorate of Student Affairs with the necessary documents for verification and mobilisation.

The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has released the Call-Up/Deployment Letters for prospective corps members under the 2026 Batch C Stream I mobilisation exercise.

PCMs can now log into the NYSC portal to check and download their letters.

With many candidates expected to access the portal at the same time, some users may experience slow loading or temporary difficulty accessing the platform. PCMs are advised to use Desktop View and remain patient if the portal becomes slow.
