A student’s sense of belonging matters. A lot. 🧡
Research continues to show a strong connection between belonging and student success, well-being and persistence toward graduation.
And it’s one of the reasons we created Campuswink.
Years ago, I watched a friend struggle right alongside her son after he chose a college where he simply didn’t feel like he fit in. He transferred the following year, found his people, and everything seemed to change—his grades, mental health and overall college experience improved.
That experience stuck with me.
I kept wondering: What if he had connected with a current student BEFORE choosing that school and asked some of the deeper, defining questions? Could he have learned something that might have changed his decision?
Of course, one conversation can’t guarantee the right college fit. But talking 1:1 with someone actually living the experience can give prospective students a perspective that’s hard to get from a website, brochure or traditional tour.
And that realization became part of the idea behind Campuswink:
The information existed.
The people existed.
The connection was missing.
So we built it. 🧡
And one VERY important takeaway from the research: don’t expect to find your people or feel an immediate sense of belonging the minute you arrive on campus.
For many students, it takes time—often a semester or longer—to build friendships, find their communities and start feeling like a new place is truly home.
So when researching colleges, don’t just ask, “Would I belong here on Day One?” Ask: “Does this feel like a place where I could build a sense of belonging over time?”
And if you’re a freshman right now and haven’t found your people yet, give yourself some grace and some time. 🧡 Belonging doesn’t always happen immediately.

As a busy mom going through the college admissions process right alongside you, I know all too well that official campus tours don’t always work with our schedules.
When we were visiting colleges, I quickly realized that sometimes our best option was finding a current student to show us around their home away from home.
And honestly? We LOVED it.

Because choosing a college based on rankings, a polished website + a walking tour is NOT enough.
The best research happens when you dig deeper: what students are actually talking about, what your major really looks like (Google course catalogs, real syllabi & actual class schedules,) where you’ll live after freshman year, which clubs you can actually join—and what everyday life on campus is really like.
And when Google, Reddit and TikTok can’t answer YOUR specific questions? Ask someone who actually goes there. 👀
