7. It feels big. It is big. It is also quite small. You want to be carried still. You ask for snuggles. You love holding hands while driving through the neighborhood — reaching from the back seat to find mine in the front. You’re also embarrassed by me. You hate to admit it, but you secretly love it when I dance in public, even though you roll your eyes. You love to tell me when you like my outfit as much as you like to tell me when you don’t. I appreciate your candor. It’s an important quality. We’re just working on tact.

7: It’s young and old. This whole motherhood thing is old and new. It’s both/and. It’s hard. It’s amazing. It’s lonely. Its is joy, and giggles, and outside voices in inside spaces, it is sweet, and it is wobbly, too.

Motherhood is an ellipsis…It’s teaching me how to pause. When I don’t, the beauty is in the reflection and the gift of the repair. It is not how I imagined it, for so many reasons. That part is complex, but it’s also really, really, really beautiful to do it this way. It’s all I know.

It’s mundane. It’s huge. Its important. It’s years that fly by. It’s remembering what it was like the day you were born and staring at your string bean, knobby-kneed body, wondering how the very thing we all have in common is also completely and utterly impossible. It’s little wins and sometimes it is big battles. It is silly. Really, really silly. It’s honest. It’s immense and all consuming love. Falling down and getting back up is just a dance. But we get to do it together. That’s pretty cool.

It’s hard to believe it’s been 7 years since you made your debut, and I made mine. I am just really proud to be your mom. I’m proud to be a mom. And I love being your mom. Thanks for choosing me, for challenging me, making me laugh, making me cry, and making me think, constantly, how to be better.
