South Branch Middle Feather was a dream run for me ever since I got into hard whitewater. Couple years ago when the Dixie fire ripped through this area people told me that the run was going to be ruined for years and it made sense, large burnt trees in a small creek drainage can be very dangerous and difficult to maneuver around. Also the scorched earth would be prone to landslides and would have issues retaining enough ground water later into the season, after most of the snow melts and we can get road access opened up. I believe this kept people away from the creek and it got overlooked.
In mid May 2024, three years after the Dixie burn, myself with Logan Smith and Issac Martinez decided to take the risk of getting skunked and we took a drive out there from Coloma. Access was not bad! We camped at the putin and drove about a mile from where the takeout trail hits the road, before we were stopped by numerous dead and down trees. The creek was crystal clear water and flow levels looked low at putin but ended up being the perfect amount of water! We only had to portage one minor rapid due to burnt wood blocking the channel, of course there were other portages but those were for different reasons. As we progressed down the river our stoke levels rose and rose coming across just beautiful waterfalls one after the other. It was a treat to go into this run expecting to find lots of problems and actually find nothing wrong at all just little extra hike out.
This run has some of the cleanest waterfalls I have run in California and I think the average difficulty is on pare with South Fork Silver Creek in the American River drainage. I think more people should go check out this run. If you like a mission, remote camping, beautiful scenery and pristine California boating, I recommend you go check it out for yourself.
Please take extra precautions in this run and at takeout! There are large waterfalls,cliffs, and slippery rocks everywhere! It is what makes this run so unique and beautiful but it is also super dangerous! Take your time, make safe decisions and enjoy the best of what California has to offer. #cali
