I’m coming home, gang. The Owl’s Club has become my Toronto homebase and for this there are a million reasons. Nothing better encapsulates what I want a canada.gov.ca show to be than this venue. This will be my 5th performance at the Owl’s Club and the vibes are 10/10 every time.

On Friday, November 13th, please join me at the club for my only Toronto show of 2026 and only event in the city until this time next year. The doors will open at 6:00 and the show will begin promptly at 7 pm. After party with DJs (myself included) will be downstairs and included in your ticket price. This is going to be a real special Toronto homecoming, so expect the unexpected: new material, new laughs and special guests. I repeat: DO NOT MISS THIS ONE.

Can’t wait to see you all there. The Big Smoke is always so good to me and I promise to be extra good to you this time around. Tickets available in my bio. Special thanks to @derekblais and @finnohara and Gare at the @owlsclub306 on Dovercourt Road. Poster by @andrewgneville of course! It’s not standup, it’s not a podcast: it’s @canada.gov.ca 💕🦉🔮 taken in Owls Club by @canada.gov.ca

Sunday, January 24 at @thewecc

Born and raised in Fredericton, John Batt is the brain behind @canada.gov.ca where he’s digging up the most obscure side of Canadian history and culture. His live one-man show feels partly like a TED Talk and partly like drinks with some good buddies where inside jokes land like a row of dominoes.

Doors 1PM / Show 2PM / ALL AGES

Co-presented with @theuniter Speaker Series

My goblins and ghouls, it is no secret that we are in the throes of spooky season and I thought what better time to share with some of you one of the eeriest spots around. I’m talking about Peter Camani’s Screaming Heads of Midlothian near Burk’s Falls in the Almaguin Highlands of Ontario.

While I wouldn’t call Peter Camani a household name, some of his work can be found in places like Buckingham Palace and even The Vatican. He’s a retired high school art teacher that has, on a 310 acre farm, converted a farmhouse into a residence he calls the Midlothian Castle complete with an imposing sculpture garden that is nothing short of terrifying. This place makes Stephen King’s house in Bangor look like a McDonald’s Playplace.

The castle is guarded by a fire-breathing dragon on the chimney which emits smoke when the residence’s fireplace is in use. Gargoyles complement the dwelling.

The sculptures in the garden are known as the ‘Screaming Heads’ and there are over 100 of them that have been built over a 30+ year period, with the project beginning in 1981. They’re about 6 metres tall and weigh as much as 30 tons. Camani has said that they serve as warnings about “environmental degradation.”

Camani has also mentioned the inspiration of the construction of the Burlington Skyway Bridge and Hwy. 403. Growing up in Hamilton, he would be pedaling along on his bike and in the middle of a field suddenly see a round tower of cement, 30 feet high where they were going to build a roundabout. Seeing these odd concrete structures as a child stuck with Camani.

He’s added The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse and a Primeval Forest, consisting of massive shrieking concrete trees.

Facing the road is a wall topped with busts of people reenacting the “see no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil” proverb - something so occult-coded it can only invoke comparisons to Epstein Island, though the horrors here seem to have a benevolent, albeit cautionary agenda.

So.. proceed with caution you must! But if you’re ever in the area, be encouraged to get spooked at 981 Midlothian Rd, Burk’s Falls, Ontario and immerse yourself in Camani’s Screaming Heads of Midlothian. taken in Screaming Heads, Midlothian Castle by @canada.gov.ca

It is with immense joy that I formally announce my return to Edmonton, Alberta: the City of Champions.

I could not be more thrilled to be invited back to take part in @winterruptyeg once again. Some of you will remember in January of 2025 - two sold out shows by your admin at the absolutely gorgeous/stunning Downtown Edmonton Community League. This year, please join me on Thursday, January 21st at the Freemason’s Hall, doors at 6:30 pm and show at 7:00 pm - a show tailored just for you.

I left a part of me in Edmonton that night and for a full explanation, you’ll have to come to hear all about it. I love the city and I love Alberta and I am almost 100% certain that you’ll still be a part of Canada when I get there in January.

Get your tickets soon since last time both shows sold out fast. Thank you @brentoliver780 and @winterruptyeg for having me back and @andrewgneville for the poster. Ticket link in bio. Recently the internet was abuzz with a pretty clever tweet that read: “what is ‘the pooh’. Why is Winnie called that. Answer me.” which I thought was a pretty perfect tweet. My assumption was that we don’t and will never know. In fact, I incorrectly believed that the truth was established. A.A. Milne never says what a Pooh is and we just have to live with that. That’s why I didn’t investigate further, I suppose.

But a follower dm’d me not much later and said, “actually, A.A. Milne does say.”

We’ve all seen the Heritage Minute. We’re all aware that Winnie is named after a female bear who was the mascot for the 2nd Canadian Infantry Brigade during World War I. In the heritage minute, a zookeeper asks a soldier “Why Winnie sir?” to which the soldier (a veterinarian named Harry Colebourn) responds: “for my hometown... Winnipeg.”

But the Pooh portion has been a mystery to me until now.

In A.A. Milne’s 1926 book “Winnie-the-Pooh”, there is a passage on page 22:

“Christopher Robin, you must shoot the balloon with your gun. Have you got your gun?”
“Of course I have,” you said. “But if I do that, it will spoil the balloon,” you said.
“But if you don’t,” said Pooh, “I shall have to let go, and that would spoil me.”
When he put it like this, you saw how it was, and you aimed very carefully at the balloon, and fired.

“Ow!” said Pooh.
“Did I miss?” you asked.
“You didn’t exactly miss,” said Pooh,
“but you missed the balloon.”
“I’m so sorry,” you said, and you fired again, and this time you hit the balloon, and the air came slowly out, and Winnie-the-Pooh floated down to the ground.

But his arms were so stiff from holding on to the string of the balloon all that time that they stayed up straight in the air for more than a week, and whenever a fly came and settled on his nose he had to blow it off.

And I think - but I am not sure — that that is why he was always called Pooh.”

Not sure? Interesting, especially since there is a competing theory!

A.A. Milne once introduced his son Christopher Robin Milne to a friend’s pet swan while they were on holiday. The swan’s name was Pooh. In fact, Pooh the Swan appears as a character in “When We Were Very Young.”

ONGOING GIVEAWAY: tag 3 friends in the comments and share this post to your story for a chance to win 2 tickets! Announcing winner Tuesday, Sept 29.

London, Ontario friends and followers, the admin is coming... nearby haha. Please join me at the Donnybrook Legion in Dorchester, Ontario for laughs, learning, darts and donnybrooks. Feel free to take what I’m assuming is fast, efficient and state-of-the-art public transportation from downtown London to Legion Branch 513 just off the 401.

I promise to make it absolutely worth your while for my very first show in this area of Southwestern Ontario. Please join me in my enthusiasm and show the admin a good time as well. I can’t wait to come and go over some very important material with you on this Friday night in October. Friday, October 2nd at 8 pm, to be specific, with doors at 7:00 pm.

What is a @canada.gov.ca live show? It’s something of a cross between a podcast and standup and it is most certainly not just a powerpoint presentation. Instead, imagine a tipsy ted talk of sorts, or the Vinyl Cafe if Stuart Maclean was half-cut and doing pointed, localized non-fiction. What’s guaranteed? A good time. We suggest getting your tickets early as space in this venue is very limited! Poster by @andrewgneville and tickets are available in my bio. Thanks to @muteprint for the assist on the show. Hope to see you there :) taken in Royal Canadian Legion DonnyBrook Branch 513 by @canada.gov.ca
