Photos I took at two very different protests, one in New York and one in Tel Aviv. There’s a link in my bio to a piece I wrote about the protests, the movements behind them, and what I see as a tragic missed opportunity arising from the moral and intellectual confusion plaguing progressives. This will be part one of a series of pieces that nobody asked for, but which I felt like writing.

On the night of Tuesday, November 29, hundreds of mostly Chinese students at Columbia University protested against the Chinese Communist Party, its draconian Covid lockdowns, and boldly against its authoritarianism writ large. They were acting in solidarity with demonstrators in China who are currently staging perhaps the most significant protests in that country in decades. At Columbia, they chanted "Free Xinxiang, free the Uighurs", "Free Tibet", and "Give me liberty or give me death!" Most of the speeches were in Chinese, but nervousness, excitement and anger were palpable among the crowd. They were gathered before a shrine to dissidents arrested in Beijing and Shanghai this week— candles and flowers laid at the feet of Columbia's famous Alma Mater statue. A couple pro-Xi Jinping voices popped up in the crowd but they were loudly drowned out with boos. One pro-Democracy speaker said in English, "This is the first time we've done this since 1989. We weren't brave enough, but now we are."

Actors used to mainly audition in-person in casting offices, but since the pandemic hit, casting has gone remote. 2+ years later, it’s clear to most that things are never going back to the way they were before. For one thing, it’s too cheap and convenient for casting directors to watch self-tapes instead. Some are happy with the change, celebrating what they see as more control over their schedules and where they live, but others lament the added expense, not knowing if the audition is being seen, and what they say is a profound loss of community, feedback, and human connection.

We miss you Bunny. You were always good for a laugh, as our mum puts it, and always looking for a piano so we could have a sing song. Thank you for making us sing, first Rowen and then me, and for helping us turn out better men in the process. We are so incredibly lucky to have known you, your humor, your kindness, your generosity of spirit, and your quirks, like how you never stopped loving those Shirley Temple movies. You’ll be missed not only by those of us who were lucky to have been changed by you, but by a town generations of whose kids you helped discover the fun of singing and dancing if not some of their own talent and self-worth as well.
Love you forever Bunny,
