In Plane Sight, a group exhibition curated by Alvaro Ilizarbe (@alvaroilizarbe), opening at Face Guts (@face.guts), Tim Biskup’s (@tbiskup) gallery in Los Angeles.

Opening Reception
July 25, 6–10 PM

“This exhibition gathers the work of women artists whose practices engage with hidden architectures in reality— structures both built and grown, inherent and emergent.

Harnessing rudimentary tools and digital technologies, the work on view traces a lineage of making that refuses hierarchy between the tactile and the algorithmic, the intuitive and the engineered.

At the heart of this show is a shared inquiry into order: the logic of architectural form, the recursive patterns of natural design, and the systems beneath technology. The artists' practices explore where these planes intersect— lifting the veil at the points where they meet, bringing what is hidden in plane sight into view”

“Hardly, Softly” opening at @sidebitch_la from 4-6pm! A group exhibition about the mutability of opposite extremes.

The show is composed of things that are hard, heavy, rigid, soft, fragile, sensitive, broken, crushed, stuffed or starved, and the places where those conditions begin to resemble one another. What looks solid might be vulnerable. What seems delicate might have survived enormous trauma. Something crushed can become something new. And the slightest variation could reverse the entire narrative.

Featuring 22 artists conveying a complicated relationship with binaries, hardly, softly asks what happens when distinctions are bent, bruised, blurred and altogether upended.

Meet Candace Thatcher. She’s going to be part of our upcoming groupshow “ In Plane Sight” July 25th. Here are a few highlights of her work throughout the years. Please make sure to give her a follow @candace_thatcher and send her some love.

Candace Thatcher is an interdisciplinary artist whose practice treats digital systems as both material and method. Working across painting, knitting, 3D printing, and plotting, she uses tools like Processing, generative algorithms, and a hacked knitting machine to convert image data into physical form—translating the speed and fragmentation of screen culture into tactile compositions that explore the tension between human touch and machine automation.

She often works with low-resolution images degraded through online circulation, converting screenshots into bump maps of raw visual data. Using visual coding environments, she manipulates pixel values to generate overlaid grids and optical color effects, then translates these digital files into vinyl stencils, layered paint, and moiré patterns evoking the screen’s luminosity and distortion.

In parallel, Thatcher uses a knitting machine modified with a custom microcontroller and AYAB interface to transmit image files directly to the machine, translating pixels into programmed rows of stitches—merging computational logic with tactile tradition to expand the boundaries of painting and sculpture.
