This photo is from the Hands Off rally here in Portland a few weeks ago — one of those moments that reminded me why I do this work.

I’m Candace Avalos: a Blacktina organizer at heart, and now Councilor for East Portland’s District 1. 🙏🏾

This page is where I speak from that deeper place. Not just the titles or the policy memos, but the personal reflections, questions, and truth-telling that don’t always make it into official government spaces.

I came into office knowing that systems don’t change unless people inside and outside of them work together to dismantle and rebuild. That means staying grounded in the movement, not just in meetings. It means leading with clarity, community, and care.

This is where I’ll keep showing up as my whole self: rooted in justice, accountable to my people, and committed to building a Portland that actually works for all of us.

There's a new Avalos in City Hall: Grandma Avalos! 🥰🩷🤭

After Portland's budget passed, a group of us introduced our own ordinance to restore critical services and protect frontline workers.

Another group introduced a competing proposal.

The biggest difference? Their ordinance once again relies on taking money from police accountability. Ours doesn't.

That isn't inevitable. It's a choice. Watch the video for why I think Portlanders should be paying attention. by @candaceforpdx

🏀✨ Alley-Oop The Vote Recap: Democracy Never Looked So Good

A special thank you to all of the players, coaches, referees, commentators, performers, volunteers, staff, sponsors, and community leaders who helped make the inaugural Alley-Oop The Vote such a success.

What started as an idea to bring more joy, community, and civic engagement into our democracy became a reality because of your willingness to show up, take the court, and help inspire others.

Thank you for your time, your energy, your good sportsmanship, and your commitment to community. Whether you were sinking shots, coaching from the sidelines, hyping up the crowd, performing, volunteering, or helping connect people to the upcoming election, you made this event special.

We could not have done it without you.

Here's to the first of what we hope will become an annual tradition of bringing people together through community, culture, and civic participation.

We won’t accept a budget that doesn’t adequately support critical services like public safety and parks, and that favors private contractors over public sector workers. Portland can be “the City that Works” again if we reject austerity and fund critical services, like Councilors Morillo and Councilor Avalos and I are proposing in the Services First amendment.
