Still dreaming about my week painting a mural for @worldwidewalls at Farrington High School 🌊💭

For my wall, I wanted to paint something that carried a meaningful message of resilience and strength. I chose to reinterpret Hokusai’s “The Great Wave off Kanagawa” — perhaps among one of the world’s most iconic and well-known pieces of art — by putting a local Hawaiʻi spin on it: the great wave looms large, its foamy froth dissipating into a vibrant spray of flowers and petals; perhaps it’s not as scary as it looks. Instead of Mount Fuji, in the background stands the Koʻolau mountain range, unmoving and unchanging, while a bright rainbow arches across the sky — a sign of better things to come.

For me, the main message of this piece lies in the juxtaposition of the powerful wave vs. the fragile origami paper boat — small but relentless in its journey to keep moving forward despite the massive and intimidating wall of water that threatens to capsize it.

A quick glimpse into some of my favorite spreads from my second sketchbook (2022-2023) ✨

I feel like this was when I really started to use my sketchbook as a way to keep track of what I was doing. I committed to the practice of immortalizing certain meals, trips, people, and places on paper instead of on a phone. This sketchbook has become a memory bank, a Time Machine, a visual story of a life (hopefully) well lived. I relish the idea of opening it up years from now to not only see how much I’ve changed artistically, but to reminisce about all the things I’ve loved.

The best part about this is that there are zero stakes involved and drawing for its own sake feels soooo good. It’s just me, doodling through the pages of my little universe and beyond ✨

downtown chinatown meets kona coffee ☕️🫘

@dripstudiohnl came to me with the idea for this one and trusted me to bring it to life 💙 @graceleelim always brings her design eye and expertise to shape the direction. it means so much because this is DRiP’s very first Kona coffee bag 🥹

something i love about working with this team is that they make sure to keep things fun and never pretentious. and that energy carried through the whole shoot and promo.

we shot it for the @kilo_summit at Made in Hawai’i, which was also a huge moment for the team.

i’m so proud and grateful to be part of this team. AND they’re nominated for Best Indie Coffee Shop in the NATION! putting hawai’i on the map 🙌🏼

the best part of the shop isn’t on the menu. ☕
it’s the pourover we didn’t rush. the matcha that’s actually matcha. the bake that came out this morning and won’t last the afternoon. real mugs, real glasses, real plates.
it’s the wall we painted, the tune we picked, the light that shows up around ten and makes the orchids look unreal.
it’s the corner where a conversation runs long and nobody hurries you out.

come sit in it. m–f 7–2, weekends 8–1. ☺️

Slowlyyy coming out of my fugue state/MIH hangover but I just wanted to say THANK YOU for a wonderful Made in Hawaiʻi Festival! I’m so grateful to everyone who stopped by my booth, said hi, gave me encouragement, and supported my art — it means the world!! When I left teaching two years ago, I never thought I could fully make a living from my art, let alone share my passion with so many people. Thank you thank you thank you!!!

To be honest, I was hesitant about doing MIH this year. I just couldn’t see how everything could work logistically with an 8 month old and four long days (and in hindsight, doing MIH while 5 months pregnant last year was easier than this year with a baby!). In the months leading up to MIH, I barely got anything done while taking care of baby, and could only work late into the night when he was asleep 🫠 (Sorry to everyone who wanted a manekineko/daruma; I’ll have to start even earlier next year!)

A HUGE shoutout to my family for really going out of their way to show up and support me: to my mom for flying in a week early and packaging all my items from morning to night while watching baby; to my sisters @baboonsoon and @vj.soon for helping set up/babysit/taking turns helping me man my booth during those insanely long hours; to my husband @kikaha.chee for holding it down at home with baby while juggling his demanding job. They’re the real MVPs! I’m really lucky to have them 🫶🏼

Special thanks to @itsmetoren for helping us with load-in, @lindseuu for helping with the load-out situation 🙃, and @loulou22 @kanakattackks @mkunioka @jlau618 for thinking of me and my sisters and providing us with sustenance and caffeine! I appreciate all of you so much!!

I’ll be updating my Etsy in the coming days with whatever’s left from MIH. Mugs completely sold out the first night, but a restock is on the way so stay tuned! Thank you for being here and supporting my art 💛

Hand painted, one-of-a-kind darumas and manekinekos dropping this week at @madeinhi! ✨I’ll have four of each available — come find me at Booth 711 near the stage on the left side of the Exhibition Hall!

To be honest, I wasn’t sure if I would be able to paint any of these for this year’s festival. Postpartum and working from home with an 8 month old has been pretty brutal, and something as time-consuming as these seemed completely out of reach. But I wanted to do something for myself again that brought me joy, and the process of painting these was a much needed reminder of who I am and what I love to do. These figurines are brought to you by 30 minute naps, late nights, some tears, and lots of love.

We couldn’t be more excited to announce our first DRiP Studio bag — with coffee grown right here in Hawaiʻi. ✨

It’s been over 3 years since we opened our studio, and we finally have a bag to call our own. We’ve always been big fans of @candicedoodles, so getting her to draw everything we love about home — and about Kona — into this design was a real full-circle moment. Single-origin Kona inside, a design you won’t find anywhere else outside.

If you’ve been to @uniqlo_hawaii lately, you’ve probably seen some new artwork adorning the store! So grateful to have had the opportunity to create this map for @uniqlo_hawaii showcasing their store at Ala Moana and their local partners around Oʻahu!

You can see the vinyl mural at the checkout area upstairs as well as wrapped around the changing room downstairs — while it’s not a traditional mural, I think it’s such a cool and efficient medium perfect for when you can’t shut down a store to paint on the walls haha
