I wasn’t really in the mood to draw bone spines… some laziness involved in it and a sparkle of stress because I’m trying to have ideas and sketch the October’s Inktober prompts and I still have a lot of blank days 🫠 so it was with happiness that I found out one of the meanings of spine is spike, thorn… so I immediately went for cactus… and cactus brought me a very cheerful colour palette and loose lines… it was fun and freeing and I was needing that. 🌵

After almost squishing my brain, this week’s prompt eventually led to something I’ve been wanting to do for a while, an anti generative AI drawing manifest.
It seems like we’re living in a dystopian nightmare… for ages people were persecuted for stealing and plagiarizing any form of art and suddenly billionaires ahead of shady companies are able to scrap every corner of the internet, stealing everything and shoving their slop down our throats, creating ecosystem devastation, spending water as if fresh water is infinite… having a gigantic eco footprint in a time where we should really really try to slow down the impact of industry, pollution and destruction in our beautiful planet. More trees and less data centers for this table, please!
So this week’s drawing is only this simple lettering manifesto in a limited but punchy palette.

This prompt took me to an (absolutely not straight) wobbly jelly. Then I imagined what could cause such havoc and some little rats came running and jumping, spreading chaos all over. I’ve always imagined what fun would be to jump to a jelly pool, and I love to just poke it and make it tremble. These friends are doing it! taking turns using this delicious but terrified pineapple jelly as a trampoline.
Using again a limited colour scheme, this time acid greens and yellows with a cherry on top for contrast, because it’s fun 😁

This week’s prompt almost made my brain explode… I really didn’t know what to do, so I tried to think of something super easy or mostly certainly happening. One of the most certain things in my life is my dog Torrão catching his ball! He’s really good at football and the best goal keeper. I’ve drawn him before with the prompt ball, but I tried another take, showing him mid air, completely focused on the ball and super happy, in a dreamy sunset colour scheme. (Adding some pictures of my dogs just because they are so precious and cute 🫢🥰)

I’ve been wanting to do a reverse mermaid for a while 😁 so this was the perfect opportunity. A bit inspired by Darwin from The Amazing World of Gumball, as I wanted to keep the goldfish full body and have a bit of drama in the flowy tail. Since regular mermaids have human torsos with lungs but they breathe underwater, I guess reverse mermaids must live out of the water and somehow breathe air through their gills. Are mermaids amphibians??? The frog friend seems to have some doubts too… either way, here’s my silly and badass reverse mermaid having a bit of fun in a puddle 🩵

A bit tired of diving deep, being in the underwater depths, sometimes even struggling to catch a breath… what if one could dive up?! Jump, emerge! Dive into the stars, let our body just flow with the galactic dance… expand, grow, surpass our limitations… just be..?
I imagined this very aquatic space scene, deep blue with a very small colour scheme where our planet’s ocean spills into our galaxy… they are somehow similar, one above, one below, both immersed in mystery 🫧

Last week’s prompt wasn’t easy... I was not immediately inspired by it and so I went on searching the history of this instrument. It’s part of the lute family and it evolved from traditional African instruments, brought by African slaves to the Caribbean and then to north america. It gained popularity during the 19th century and in the 20’s started being associated with jazz, then folk, country and bluegrass music. I found this 1881’s painting (I’m sharing the image as well) by Léon Delachaux, called “The Banjo Player” and decided to do a modernised version of it, capturing and paying respect to the banjo’s origins and the soul behind it.

I’m sooooo sooo late with this one… this time not because of laziness but because I was ill and had no energy for social media 😣

I knew exactly what to do as soon as the prompt came out. This is one of the best things to do, just laying around with some friends, watching the sky. It could also be looking for shapes in a cloudy sky but since we’re in August I chose to put my friends watching the Perseid meteor shower. I hope you can feel all the nostalgia… I miss this so much, just hanging out, having fun, without time and schedules, no responsibilities… just nature and it’s beauty.

I was vacationing at the beach last week and it was good! I just wish it lasted a bit longer… sigh! Obviously I did the least I could and now I’m super late posting this, oops! 😬 So this week’s drawing was absolutely inspired by the beach. I met a cute friend who was super busy, running around in the sand and I thought to myself it could be dragging around a little wagon full of tiny seashells. Hunting for tiny seashells is one of my favorite things to do at the beach since I was a kid. And it seems to also be a favorite for this cool beetle, we call them carochas or carochinhas in Portuguese (Blaps lusitanica) I think they are called cellar beetles in English, and they are usually seen walking around our beaches. I used to build them sand houses when I was little 😁 and tried to feed them seaweeds lol this one has a fairy friend and they spend a lot of time running errands, who knows why…

There are a lot of elegant beings in our world, but there’s something cool about Eurasian hoopoes (upupa epops), it’s like they could participate in a fashion show and go straight to a punk party and would fit both worlds. Some kind of Vivienne Westwood of birds. They are definitely super stylish with their crest, long beak and the colour scheme. I tried to represent them as if they were a cool band shooting a cover album. It’s always a pleasure to meet one in real life ☺️

Bug - Inktober 52 week 28

I was so excited with this week’s prompt. I love drawing bugs! The hard part was choosing which ones to do... so I restricted myself to local bugs just to narrow it down a bit and even that was hard lol
I had to choose this cool spider because I happened to meet some last year and I was absolutely amazed by them and how they camouflage on the flowers to hunt. Then i discovered the females can change to various colours to mimicry different flowers! (I’m adding some pictures i took). The striped bug is so common here and i love how graphic they are. Also very easy to find are the beautiful iridescent spanish flies. The full list of bugs:
