Mentally preparing to love and train Ms. Sandy Cheeks. I’m a professional dog trainer, and I’m good at what I do… but that doesn’t mean I’m not nervous to mess up! Right now, I’m focused on managing my own expectations and promising myself to honor who my dog is as an individual.

This is my list of 5 important things to tackle in the months after Sandy comes home - it may not be everyone’s list and it may change. But it’s important to think about your lifestyle and what specific things your dog will routinely experience! by @caninepovdogtraining

I’m watching my brother’s dogs for a while and they’re two big active dogs who are used to lots of outdoor time. I wilt in the heat and can’t be outside with them so that calls for some creativity!

You don’t always have to BUY toys and puzzles. If your dog doesn’t have a problem eating non-food items, this DIY stuff could make your life easier and your dog’s brain tired-er! #dogtrainingatlanta by @caninepovdogtraining

It’s always kinda sad to finish a package with such great clients 😩 Today I got a little content while Maisie nailed her Mat Training practice in the park! This is Maisie’s 6th session with me and she and her mom have been doing great work to get her to this point.

This skill can help dogs settle, feel safe, and give consent! It’s versatile. For Maisie, the Mat Training game creates another avenue of reinforcement besides chasing critters!

I can’t believe how many of these red flags I’ve seen on popular dog trainer’s websites and social media posts. There’s so much misinformation out there! Yes, red flag trainers pedaling misinformation are board members, “expert” consultants, even celebrities. Be careful out there! by @caninepovdogtraining

Look, fireworks and dogs generally don’t mix and it’s one of the most common sound sensitivities! Personally, I’m not enthused by the sky fire. BUT it’s inevitable every year so get your pup prepped!

If you’re planning to medicate your dog and then go out this 4th, confirm with your vet it’s okay for your dog to be alone. I’m not a vet and you never know what may happen so it’s best to double check.

And for the love of dogs everywhere, it’s okay to comfort your dog when they’re scared! If someone said you’re “rewarding” their anxious behavior, then THEY’RE WRONG. When a toddler runs behind our legs or asks to be picked up when they’re scared, we don’t worry about rewarding their fear! If anything, you reinforce their belief that you’re safe and trustworthy. From the canine point of view, there’s plenty to be scared of!

Mama and I were together from May 15, 2019 to March 14th, 2024. We spent almost every day together and my life was stripped bare in an instant when she passed. She will always be my best friend, mentor in love, and role model for resilience.

SUMMERTIME DANGER FOR OUR DOGS

A dog’s normal body temp is 101 to 102.5 - hot air feels hotter to them than it does to us. Be mindful and pay attention to your dogs body when they’re outside! Provide shade, rest, and water. Heat stroke is extremely common in dogs. Take your walks earlier or later, hang out in shady areas, or simply switch to indoor enrichment to keep your pup safe!

⚠️REACTIVE DOG TRAINING⚠️

DISTANCE is your greatest training tool when trying to reduce your dog’s reactivity. You want to get close enough that they see a trigger but not close enough that they have a reaction. Close enough to see is UNDER threshold - reacting is OVER threshold.

Make sure to prepare by spending time training reliable cues to get your dogs attention and to manage them in the environment. I use focus, kissy/clicking noises, stay with release word, turn, call dog’s name, find it, and stop.

Make sure to always bring treats with you! Higher value treats like hot dogs or chicken may be needed in distracting or chaotic environments. If your dog is not taking food, make more distance!

Go at your dog’s individual pace. Your dog’s behavior is DATA about what you should be doing. Remember - a dog experiencing reactivity is having a hard time. It’s our job to help them get comfortable. Avoid close encounters with triggers that may set your dog off.

Avoid tools like pinch collars and e-collars. These tools may stop the behavior in the moment but can add to a dog’s stress response over time further strengthening their emotional response to triggers. A dog may associate the pain or discomfort from these tools with the trigger. Instead, reach out to a QUALIFIED trainer to help you form a counter-conditioning plan.

I did it! After setting my sights on the CPDT-KA title four years ago, I’m proud to have finally met these standards. I want my clients to know that I’m committed to earning their trust and keeping up with the current science of training.
