A durational experiment that challenges the participant to only wear fixed sets of Wenjüe Lu pieces for one full year, or 365 days

Pattern itself is merciless at times. Even Ever-Changingness can be rendered, through its lenses, as Unchanging; in forms of ceaseless need for change, without much thought given to the Ends such Means could beget— Burnout from the “meaningless” search of “meaningfulness”:

Never, never would I have thought that a lightning strike of an idea less than 1 year ago would spiral into an immaculate swirl of events, enlivening the very purpose of the studio - to communally challenge the hypocrisy that dominates the Pseudo-Fashion realm, of Ego-Sickness, and Hedonistic-Nihilism.

What makes something cool?
What makes something cool and cool again?
To what ends does one curate oneself?

We‘re obsessed with Cycles: of time, of history, of life. So obsessed, we thought we could possess them, that we could OWN the cycles-in-themselves; when the movement itself has no inherent beginnings nor ends: ceaselessly periodic and endlessly pulsatile, much like our own journeys.

L said: “Every day I wake up and curate myself, an attempt to control the way I perceive and am perceived, not just physically, but also at times for the digital world and its attention. To entrust a part of the curation of the self to friends and their creations is a way of surrendering that control.“

3 stages to each ritual - Arnold van Gennep
1. Separation: removal from ordinary or social life.
2. Margin(limen): a threshold between past and present modes of existence.
3. Re-aggregation: the return to mundane life, in an altered or higher status.

Meet Icarus, Michael @cannedjunk ’s Nimbii
- Mended and patched over 2 yrs, take care of what you cherish!

- The Story

Icarus is among the first generation of Nimbiis born in April of 2023

As we gradually thought out and finalized the patterns for @oo.iiiiiiiiiiiiiiii ’s Nimbiis Keychain series over 2 yrs, its form eventually congealed into the version the studio is offering now.

For over two and a half years, Icarus accompanied me across rain and snow.

I’m by no means a fluent sewer, but I became simply happier every time I could help it exist for a little longer

It didn’t have a name back then, partly because it hadn’t much life in it to be lived through yet.

- The Name

In Greek Mythology, Icarus ignored Daedalus’s instructions not to fly too close to the Sun; the waxed wings eventually melted, he fell from the sky, plunged into the sea, and drowned.

I recently decided on the name to remind myself the danger of the desire to be one with the Sun, I’ll always get hurt if I think I can accomplish anything alone; we’re all communal beings.

- Recent History & A Personal Tangent

I couldn’t help but see Nimbiis as one of the antitheses to this new generation of AI(LLM) generation.

Almost 3 years since ChatGPT was made available to the public on November 30th of 2022. Surprisingly then but unsurprising now, it gathered 100 million users in less than 2 months (It took TikTok 9 months and Instagram 2.5 years to do the same).

Luckily, and undoubtedly, the creation of Nimbiis is AI-free:

They’re hand-sketched, hand-prototyped, and hand-realized by @w.luuuu ; the concepts and backstories are generated by my feeble human brain, written by my human hand.

For this reason, they feel alive, as if they’re really raindrops destined yet too reluctant to fall from the sky, in the way our imagination devised, wishing to endow them with life.

Cuteness is not all benign; it could also be nihilistically malign.

Life gets depressing when novelty and efficiency become disproportionally prioritized. I have so much to learn from Icarus the Nimbii.

Going against AI slops, one stitch at a time, one patch at a time, one Nimbii at a time.
