This is Ocean Ski! 🌊😎
Adrenaline pumping, wave riding adventure using the power of nature. 🌬

Downwind paddling is what ocean paddlers dream of but ocean skis are the most versatile kayak craft, suitable in all conditions and waterways. The NZ Ocean Ski series is made up of 8 races per summer. But you don’t need a race to experience the thrill of ski paddling. #PickUpAPaddle this summer and ride the wave.

‼️The new lifejacket law comes into effect across Aotearoa New Zealand today (9th October) requiring everyone on board recreational craft six metres or less in length to wear a properly fitted lifejacket while underway.‼️

Under the new national requirement, everyone on board a recreational craft (including kayaks and canoes) measuring six metres or less must wear an appropriately sized lifejacket while the craft is underway.

The rule applies across all New Zealand waterways, including lakes, rivers, harbours and coastal waters. It is designed to establish a clear, consistent approach to lifejacket use and reduce preventable harm on the water.

A lifejacket must meet an approved standard, be in serviceable condition and fit the wearer properly. It is important to check that the lifejacket is suitable for the paddler's size and the activity being undertaken.

For craft longer than 6m in length, it remains a requirement to carry correctly fitting lifejackets for everyone on board, unless in times of heightened risk when they must be worn.

🏆Congratulations for our New Zealand Ocean Ski Champions for 2026! 🌬🌊

The National Championships were held at the Tawhiti Rahi Coastal Challenge on Saturday, with paddler racing from Tutukaka out to Tawhiti Rahi (the Poor Knights Islands). It was true ocean race, with 15-20kt winds taking paddlers out to the islands 24km off the Northland coast and not one for the faint-hearted.

It is a second ocean ski open national title for both Rebecca Cole and Gene Prato, and a first in the doubleski for Caitlin Ruddle and Simon Woods, with age group winners also recognised in the single ski.

Full results can be found on our website.
Congratulations to all paddlers, and massive thank you to race director Tim Eves, and all the volunteers and safety boat crew who helped make this iconic event happen. by @canoeracingnz
