CSOR: Canadian Special Operations Regiment

Special Forces Operators are SOF generalists, who pursue mastery of Special Warfare, Special Reconnaissance and Direct Action. They are able to conduct and enable a wide variety of special operations tasks at home and abroad.

What CSOR operators do:

Operate in different types of missions such as:

•Direct Action
•Strategic Reconnaissance
•Special Warfare
•Military Assistance
•Foreign Internal Defence

ROSC: Régiment d’opérations spéciales du Canada

Les opérateurs des forces spéciales sont des généralistes des FOS qui maîtrisent la guerre spéciale, la reconnaissance spéciale et l'action directe. Ils sont capables de mener et de faciliter une grande variété de tâches d'opérations spéciales au pays et à l'étranger.

CJIRU: Canadian Joint Incident Response Unit

Experts in combating CBRN (Chemical, Biological, Radiological, & Nuclear) threats. CJIRU is also responsible for the following:

• Provide a rapid response of detecting, identifying and mitigating CBRN hazards
• Deal with specialized equipment
• Sustain a high level of readiness through training and courses
• Deploy with short notice for domestic and international incidents

UIIC: Unité interarmées d’intervention du Canada

Experts dans la lutte contre les menaces CBRN (chimique, biologique, radiologique et nucléaire). Unité interarmées d'intervention du Canada, UIIC est également chargée des tâches suivantes :

• Gournir une réponse rapide pour détecter, identifier et atténuer les risques CBRN
• Gérer les équipements spécialisés
• Maintenir un haut niveau de préparation grâce à des formations et des cours.
• Se déployer dans les plus brefs délais en cas d'incidents nationaux et internationaux.

“If you ever get a chance to go - you go.”

That is Colonel Todd O’Malley’s advice to anyone offered an opportunity to serve in special operations.

In the final part of our conversation, Todd completes the remarkable journey that began with an unexpected helicopter selection.

He returns to Moose Jaw; first as a flight commander learning to instruct on the Harvard and later as Commandant of 2 Canadian Forces Flying Training School. He explains the reward of helping students succeed, the responsibility of ending someone’s training and why instructors must never stop learning.

Todd then takes us back to 427 Squadron, where he commanded B Flight, helped develop maritime counterterrorism capabilities and witnessed the transformation from tactical helicopter support to a dedicated special operations aviation squadron.

We also explore why he left the RCAF, what civilian aviation taught him, what brought him back into uniform and how UAS, counter-UAS, space integration and lessons from allies are shaping the future of CANSOFCOM.

It is a fitting conclusion to Todd’s story, and our history of the people who helped build Canadian special operations aviation.

“We were not going to let that fail.”

Todd takes us into Somalia with 427 Squadron, where landing a Twin Huey in talcum-like desert sand could completely erase every visual reference. He recounts a helicopter crash in a brownout, an unexpected mission supporting U.S. special operations forces and the uncertainty crews faced every time they returned to land.

He also reflects candidly on the Somalia Affair, its aftermath and the difficulty of coming home from a deployment overshadowed by scandal.

From there, Todd brings us inside the earliest days of JTF2: flying alongside the RCMP, becoming the unit’s first Air Liaison Officer and helping develop helicopter tactics for missions where crews would have only one opportunity to get the insertion right.

This is the story of the people, missions and “refuse to lose” culture that helped build Canadian special operations aviation.

That story captures just how experimental the early days of night-vision flying were in Canadian tactical aviation.

Elements from CJIRU, the RCMP ERT, and Toronto Emergency Task Force participate in Exercise VITAL ARCHER at the decommissioned Hearn Generating Station in the Port Lands, 2026.

Launched in 2013, Exercise VITAL ARCHER is an annual exercise that brings together Canadian and U.S. militaries with law enforcement, security, and civilian agencies to practice coordinated crisis response in a no-fail scenario, focusing on interoperability and preparedness across all levels of government.
