Introducing: The Cantina Diaries, an exploration of a decade of visiting cantinas. I started sharing photos and anecdotes about my favorite cantinas on Instagram five years after my first move to Mexico as a way to capture the people, culture and food of my favorite spots in Guadalajara. Now, I will tell more from these visits through The Cantina Diaries. I’ll profile my favorite cantinas; share never-before-told stories from a decade of cantineando, or visiting cantinas; explore how cantinas pop up in Mexican music, film and literature; and unpack the drinking culture behind the “temple of two doors,” as poet Salvador Novo once described cantinas. This first post is about the people who influenced how I think about food and drink. Subscribe and follow along. ¡Salud! #thecantinadiaries #cantina #tijuana #guadalajara by @cantinachroniclesmx

My grandpa loved to create little comics. Here’s one he made for his late nephew Chuey. They’re probably sharing a beer together somewhere out there at the Rosarito Beach Comber in the sky. Somehow this stuff always ends up with me. It was just the size to fill a gap in the mess of a mural wall over my desk. #cantina #abuelo #qepd by @cantinachroniclesmx

“La ciudad se volvió más aséptica y sin vida. Y aunque el Gil fue una cantina decadente, francamente fea y sucia, también fue testigo de innumerables alegrías, llantos y noches sin fin. Nos vamos quedando sin lumpanares y sin poesía,” - Gerardo Esparza sobre el cierre de Bar Gil “The city became more sterile and lifeless. And although El Gil was a seedy dive—frankly ugly and filthy—it also bore witness to countless moments of joy, tears, and endless nights. We are running out of dives and poetry,” - Gerardo Esparza 📸: Gonzalo Wolf, October 2020 #bargil #gdlcentro #cantina by @cantinachroniclesmx
”The recent closure of the legendary “Bar Gil,” a bastion of traditional cantina culture in the Centro neighborhood, stands as the ultimate reminder that gentrification not only displaces residents but dissolves identities,” writes University of Guadalajara socio-urban studies scholar Francisco A. Gama Tejeda “El reciente cierre del legendario «Bar Gil», un bastión de la tradición cantinera en la colonia Centro, es el último recordatorio de que la gentrificación no solo desplaza habitantes, sino que disuelve identidades,” escribe Francisco A.
