Let's make Riso together!

This workshop led by artist and HKU MAFA alumnus Jasper Yi Cao of Cactus Press, approaches Riso as a way to circulate knowledge and develop shared practices 🤝🖨️

What you can get:
A copy of the collaboratively created zine
Some of the test prints
Color catalog from Casco
Experience and an introduction to using the Riso machine
A cheerful mood

Sign up:
Capacity is limited, so please RSVP via info@casco.art
The session costs 20 eur.
Beginners and experienced printmakers alike are welcome!

Organized in the context of The Land School, this public workshop takes place in the Harvest Room, part of the exhibition and a space for gathering and commoning throughout our Autumn program.

A Transoceanic Imagination : Midsummer, 1994
🌞⛵️🌊🍃
*
The project begins with a box of letters from 1994, exchanged between a transnational married couple. The correspondence traces their everyday lives across different countries and the emotional ties sustained through transoceanic communication.
*
I began by reading, excerpting, and translating the letters, while creating photographic images in response to their contents. The project unfolds in three parts: an edited and translated letter archive; a “radio” installation; and a photographic collage that reimagines the archive.
For the photographic component, I traced the West African cities mentioned in the letters through Google Maps, reproducing satellite images through Risograph printing. These were combined with gelatin silver photographs I took in the Netherlands, bringing together images from different times, places, and media.
Through this process, I found a resonance across time between myself and the letter writers, shaped by migration, departure, and longing.
*
Belonging and displacement can often exist within a single thought. An unresolved sense of fate becomes an invisible thread, binding individuals to land, time, and space. Standing in 2026, holding letters from 1994, where might these traces of history and constructed landscapes lead our imagination?

Horizon, I know you are a ship that will never anchor.
⛵️🌊📷
This project originates from travel photos in my family album.
Inspired by these images, I set out to find and photograph similar scenes around Niort and nearby coastal cities, then cropped, collaged, and assembled them together.
The endless coastline seems to stretch beyond sight, yet across the sky, they somehow reconnect.

Presenting our next Time Based Event by Jasper Yi Cao & Cactus Press!!!!
.
Sunday the 27th:
"Letters, language, and Paper Actions"
reading performance, 20 min.

Letters sent from Côte d’Ivoire to China in 1994 have crossed time itself and remained here in the present, waiting to be picked up once again, to be listened to and read anew.
In the Chinese literary imagination, especially in classical poetry, willows are often associated with homesickness and wandering. Here, this longing for home drifts across geography and time like willow catkins carried by the wind.
Within love letters and family letters, the movement of personal emotion and the memory of a collective era have never stood apart from one another.
I hope to read these small letters together with everyone: to read together, and to write together.

(During this event, we will collectively record readings of the letters and create a transmission of voices addressed to a distant time.)
.
Sunday the 5th:
"Letters, language, and Paper Actions"
workshop, 30 min.

Cactus Press is a publishing collective formed by three women living between the Netherlands and the Mandarin-speaking world.
We are drawn to gestures of resistance that grow out of dryness and silence.

Here, we will bring together these transnational letters and printed materials from Cactus Press to create a kind of stitching-together of time.

See you there! by @cao1caoyi

I’m very excited to share that "Os Batismos da Meia-Noite" has been shortlisted for the Best Author Book Award of the year at Les Rencontres d’Arles!!

This is a really nice step for the project... and especially for a self-published DiY book, it feels kind of reassuring. So... I am very happy about this one.

Thanks to Jasper Cao Yi 🦋 and Filipa Frois Almeida for being by my side throughout the whole process, and to all the friends who contributed in different ways during the making of the book.

Very grateful also to the municipality of Arcos de Valdevez and the Santa Cruz project for supporting the publishing of this book. @municipio.arcos.valdevez

The shortlisted works will be on display during the festival, from July 6 to October 4, 2026, at La Mécanique Générale (LUMA Foundation).

See you very soon in Arles 💫🫶🏻

ENG: Happy to say that “Os Batismos da Meia-Noite” book is now alive and kicking!

I’m very excited to share that this new born is already within us: an independent, physical, three-dimensional and palpable entity. Some people are already enjoying a copy and some are waiting to receive it soon... and that makes me very happy.

What can you find in the book? A mystic mountain, magic, Nature, witchcraft, rivers, exorcisms, portals, forest, spells, rituals, forms of protection against Evil, wild animals, the Death, tons or ancient rocks… all of this and more to be discovered.

There will be physical sales points in bookstores very soon. But if you want a copy NOW, you can write me a message or an email, ask for it in the comments of the post or also buy it online on this website:

Què hi trobareu al llibre? Una muntanya mística; màgia, Natura, rituals, bruixeria, rius, exorcismes, portals, bosc, encanteris, formes de protecció contra el Mal, animals salvatges, la Mort, tones de roques antigues... tot això i més per descobrir.

Molt aviat hi haurà punts de venda físics a llibreries. Però si voleu una copia JA, podeu escriure’m un missatge o un mail, demanar-la als comentaris del post o també comprar-la online a aquesta web:

I am very happy to share that Os Batismos da Meia‑Noite is becoming a book!!!

This work is a special personal journey that began in 2021 with an unexpected invitation. The studio Fahr023.1, from Porto, contacted me to offer me a residency in the north of Portugal, in a place that, in their own words, “we believe could be right for you”: Peneda‑Gerês. A mountain I had never heard of before.

Five years later, these images have gone a long way: Arles, Premio Galicia, Adorna, the first show we did at Encontros da Imagem a few years ago… and now the work is finally taking the form of a beautiful book.

I haven’t held the physical copies yet (cannot wait for it) and I will be sharing more details very soon.

The book will be available for sale shortly, in bookstores and online. For now, if you’d like to pre‑order a signed copy, you can send me a message, an email… or simply drop a line here.

Thanks for the support along the way.
