The more I travel, the more I realize how fragile my certainties are. My morals, my habits, even my dreams are shaped by where I was born. How do I go home and tell my uncle that those people aren’t dangerous, only far away? That if I had grown up under their sky, I would have loved what they love, feared what they fear, believed their stories just as fully? You died three years ago, and tomorrow I turn 21. A full grown man! My birthday is always a reminder of you, and how much of you has quietly shaped my life.

Your unwavering support, your radical empathy, and the way you moved through the world doing exactly what you wanted without caring too much for what the traditional indian society thought… I think about that often. It makes me feel like I’m allowed to be freer than I sometimes believe I am.

Three years ago I came out to you. I was so unsure of everything. You wrote me a letter and added a little “Pride Every Day” sticker. I carry it everywhere I go.

It became this quiet reminder for me, that whatever happens, I’ll have my sisters by my side. (as palak di says, “tu kar, mein hu”)

Birthdays now feel like a strange overlap. A reminder that I lost you, but also that I carry you. In the life I’m building. In the values I stand by. In the way I love my friends. In the people I choose to keep close to me. a reminder of my resilience even!

I’ve surrounded myself with so much love. not only family but lovely friends, people who feel like home in different ways and continents far away from home. and in that, I’ve learned that the griever does find meaning again!

I think you’ve set me up to be a good carefree man but I don’t think I’ll ever fill the swag gap we had.
