Designers, architects, brand gurus, artists, creative practitioners and makers are gearing up for the Cape Town edition of @designweeksouthafrica. Presented by Pinterest, this year’s edition takes place from 22-25 October and promises to be packed with innovative thinking around the theme, “The Shape of Us”. What does this mean? The various disciplines, from architecture to furniture and fashion design, craft and urban design and textiles will consider how “design reflects the people we are, the places we inhabit and the ways we live together”. This year’s programme includes UNBUILT, sponsored by @dhkarchitects and launching on 23 October, which will showcase ideas, projects and prototypes that speak what shapes urban infrastructure, mobility, public placemaking and more. UNBUILT will be hosted at short.MARKET in collaboration with our partner The @missionforinnercityct. Design Week co-organiser Roland Postma says the initiative is “about bringing design out of traditional exhibition spaces and into the city, where people can experience it firsthand.” Highlights include: ● Shaped by Place: 40 Years of Architectural Practice – SAOTA reflects on four decades of architectural design; ● Where Textiles Tell Stories – Somila Tshazibane explores textiles, identity and storytelling; and ● A Decade of Inspiration: 10 Years of Good Good Good – Celebrating locally made design through collaborations, archival pieces and creative inspiration. ➡️ For the full Design Week South Africa Cape Town programme click on the link in bio ➡️ UNBUILT will be hosted at 74 Shortmarket St, a new independent retail and cultural destination #DesignWeekCapeTown #ComeToTown #SupportTheCBD by @capetownccid
Happy days! The trees in town have been spruced up with fabric wrapping in bright, breezy colours. Come on, Summer, we are ready for you. Over 600 trees are being wrapped as part of the CCID Urban Management department’s beautification of certain areas in the CBD to uplift the public realm. Creating a welcoming atmosphere for all our visitors, workers, property owners and residents, the initiative also recognises Breast Cancer Awareness month in October with some trees being wrapped in pink to support this drive. “The colourful tree wraps will remain in place throughout the festive season, adding a touch of magic, and reminding us that even the smallest touches can make our City a more beautiful and joyful place,” says Kally Benito, head of CCID Urban Management. Enjoy! #CCIDUrbanManagement #YourCBDYourCCID #WorkingForYou by @capetownccid

Kaapstad, jou lekker ding! The Mother City shined in the latest Condé Nast Traveller @cntraveler Readers’ Choice Awards, coming 8th in the Top Big Global Cities 2026 list, 10th on the Friendliest Cities list and ranked 15th overall globally. It was also the only African city on both lists. The UK magazine’s annual poll on their readers’ travel experiences saw 800 000 respondents cast their votes. Clearly many of them as impressed with the city as we are. Cape Town was probably played a part in South Africa being ranked the 16th best country and the 10th best in the world for food. Commenting on the awards, Alderman James Vos Mayoral Committee Member for Economic Growth and Tourism, said: “For those of us who know the Mother City well, it’s no surprise that travellers rate us as one of the friendliest and best. In fact, I would say the one speaks to the other. Yes, the beaches and mountains are beautiful beyond compare, but it’s Capetonians who are so welcoming to visitors. That’s what makes this place unmatched.” We agree. Halala, Cape Town! 📸 @ryanwarneke (first & third image) #CapeTownAccolades #CondeNastReadersChoice by @capetownccid

This latest solo exhibition by _hughbyrne_ of new non-figurative works considers “colour, structure and material”, with each composition balancing spontaneity with restraint. The resulting artworks display a measured, arresting tension between order and disruption, with “colour and form constantly adjusting to one another”. 📍 Find @ebonycurated at 67 Loop St Running until 14 November 2026 This solo exhibition of new work by Congolese artist Tusevo Landu, Where We Become, explores how identity is shaped by “place, family, cultural inheritance, and lived experience”. Landu, a self-taught painter who is based in South Africa, uses African masks to reveal ancestry, memory and identity – while obscuring the faces of the figures in the artworks, which are painted in oil on repurposed shade cloth. He first encountered the material through his mother’s work as a tailor. The masks, he says, reflect “the negotiation between inherited culture and life in South Africa”. 📍 Find @worldartgallery at 68 Long St Running until 29 October 2026 It’s all about blood, sweat and tears, says ceramicist Dominic Pretorius about this exhibition of his latest sculptures. Passion is a central concept here, embodying intense feelings such as grief and desire, “when the body turns to liquid and pours out”. The resultant shapes are fluid, playful and expressive, often defying gravity. There are bowls suspended at various angles, hanging or floating. Then there are droplets, some small, some monumental, on mirror-topped plinths. The exhibition coincides with a volume of correspondence between @dominicpretoriusceramicist and Lucienne Bestall, called One Half Runs Water / The Other Runs Blood, which is available for purchase. 📍 Find @vela.projects at 66 Plein St This initiative, called “6 Photographers. 6 Different Styles”, is a platform for “new work, new stories and new perspectives” from a small group of photographers. The brainchild of Sean Furlonger, it brings people and photographic prints together. “At each edition, photographers bring a selection of their work, and their prints are laid out on tables for people to browse, discover and buy. It’s all about giving back, making meaningful connections, changing the way a building engages with its surroundings and the people who use it. In this specific case, it’s about a beautiful arched thoroughfare created by @blokliving with @studio.kalki that links Upper Long St to Queen Victoria St – and the CBD’s iconic green lung, the Company’s Garden. The residential development in question is Blok’s R350-million TENONV, its first residential building in town, located at Vredenburg Lane, which came on stream earlier this year. Says Blok CEO Jacques van Embden: “We have always believed that a residential development should contribute something to the city around it. The experience and value of a building shouldn’t stop at its front door or only be available to the people who live there.” The archway, called “Between Two Suns”, was officially opened on Friday and is a “meaningful urban intervention that creates a route that residents, visitors and people simply moving through the city can all use”, says Van Embden. The thoroughfare also features a public seating area. Here you can pause and enjoy the incredible ceramic tile installation of @studio.kalki, led by Nikhil Tricam and Nindya Bucktowar. Drawing inspiration from the Company’s Garden, the colour palette references the mountains, oceans, and flora. Why the name “Between Two Suns”? The composition is framed by the rising and setting sun. “The idea of the two suns became particularly important because it speaks to movement, time and the experience of passing through a space rather than simply looking at an artwork,” says Troy Squires, Head of Marketing at Blok. Well done on this extraordinary, innovative and insightful collaboration. 📍Find TENONV and the “Between Two Suns”thoroughfare at 10 Vredenburg Lane. 📸 @parisbphoto #BlokDevelopers #TENONV #TwoRisingSuns by @capetownccid
This is not my forever. Behind every homeless person in Cape Town is a name, a history, and a future still being written. Homelessness in Cape Town is just one chapter of their story. Every day, Capetonians come face to face with people living on the street, and every day, it gets easier to look away. We've become desensitised to the reality of our own people. This campaign aims to lift the veil, and help the city see the person, and not the narative we have built in our head. Meet the people the city walks past every day. Watch their stories. #ThisIsNotMyForever #CCID #CapeTown #HomelessnessAwareness @haven.org.za @streetscapes_izitalato @youthsolutionsafrica by @capetownccid
House Union Block (HUB) Gallery’s Delete Nton’ntoni is a group exhibition featuring the work of contemporary artists Luyanda Mkhuthungu, Knowledge Marongedza, Tafadzwa Tega and Lwando Dlamini. The exhibition, which is centred on collaboration, shared creative practice and dialogue, challenges what is seen as a growing culture of individualism in art and proposes a reset. Curated by Tafadzwa Tega, the exhibition was part of the HEAT Winter Arts Festival and shows the results when artists work together and not in isolation, using conversation to explore themes of identity, migration, emotional intimacy. 📍 Find @house_union_block Gallery at Union House, 25 Commercial St Running until 26 October 2026 Extraordinary works from the permanent collection are on show, spanning 1925 to 2025. Only 0.01 % of the National Gallery’s 11 500+ works are on display in this centennial curation. While the collection, historically, is weighted towards Western and European art thanks to the early collection and exhibition policy, in recent decades the focus has shifted to South African art, especially that which represents the full population. Expect work from Irma Stern to Picasso to Pierneef, Sekoto, and more. @iziko_sang 📍 Find the National Gallery in the Company’s Garden, Queen Victoria St The Association for Visual Arts (AVA), a 55-year-old membership-based organisation aimed at building an artistic community, plays a crucial role in the city’s arts ecosystem. Every bollard tells a story. Every bollard proves that thoughtful urban creativity can bloom in unexpected places. And spark joy. It goes beyond aesthetics. It’s a deliberate effort to soften the harsh edges of a gritty CBD. To reclaim pedestrian walkways as spaces meant to inspire, enliven an ordinary walking route and create interest. Our bollard project, an initiative of CCID Urban Management, has transformed sections of town into vibrant public spaces. From St Georges Mall to Waterkant St and Thibault Square. Take a look, and you’ll see how these often dour, ordinary and wonky pieces of public infrastructure have been given a new lease on life … and a lick of beautiful paint. On this project, which has been rolled out in stages since last year, we’ve partnered with well-known street artists @hand.cantrol360crew. With care and meticulous attention to detail, they have hand-painted hudnreds of bollards, depicting themes close to Cape Town and the city centre’s heart. From our indigenous fauna and flora to iconic places of interest. Take a closer look. They tell a story. Every single one. ➡️ Next time you’re in town, take a photo of a bollard you love and tag our page using the hashtag #YourCBDYourCCID and help us celebrate the artists who made this possible. #CCIDUrbanArt #PublicSpacesInTown #YourCBDYourCCID by @capetownccid
Take the humble, hard-working South African stalwart. The lappie. Then turn it not only into a business idea but a brand. And in so doing, create a lifeline for women on the Cape Flats. This is the story behind the SpaZa Store, which has opened in Hout St in the Cape Town CBD, following its long tenure at the V&A Waterfront. The eco-friendly homeware brand is the brainchild of Canadian-born Julia Schaffer. Fourteen years ago, and based in Cape Town, she was looking for a dish cloth like the ones here grandmother used to make at home. After searching high and low she decided to make them herself. Having worked in South Africa’s fashion trade, she knew women who were employed in the factories left their homes at the crack of dawn and return after dark. So, she gave them the opportunity to create home industries. Today, @spazastore has a global community, producing contemporary, environmentally sustainable products – from homeware to food storage covers, produce and bread bags and more – with a South African design ethic. And to think it all started with lappies made by ladies in Mannenburg. ➡️ Read the article on Julia Schaffer’s brilliant business journey here (link in bio) ➡️ You will also find it in the latest issue of the CCID’s urban newspaper, City Views. Here is the link to this issue (link in bio) 📍 Find SpaZa store at 71 Hout St | www.spazastore.com #CCIDComms #SpaZaStore #CityViews by @capetownccid
