FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

Capron Park Zoo is aware of recent discussions regarding the future use of the Zoo’s grounds and the possibility of repurposing this space. We understand that conversations about community assets can bring forward strong feelings and diverse perspectives. We respect the City’s responsibility to thoughtfully evaluate long-term planning decisions and remain committed to participating constructively in that process.

As an accredited institution, our foremost responsibility is and will always be the welfare of the animals in our care. We operate under rigorous standards established by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) and the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), ensuring that animal health, safety, and wellbeing remain central to every operational decision. Regardless of broader discussions about facilities or future planning, our professional team continues to provide consistent, high-quality care in full compliance with all regulatory and accreditation requirements.

For generations, Capron Park Zoo has served as a place of education, conservation, and connection for our community. We are proud of the role we play in inspiring young learners, supporting wildlife conservation efforts, and providing accessible family experiences. We remain committed to working collaboratively with City leadership, stakeholders, and residents to thoughtfully evaluate Capron Park Zoo’s future and ensure that decisions reflect both fiscal responsibility and community values.

We also recognize that Capron Park Zoo belongs to the community it serves. We encourage residents, members, partners, and supporters to stay engaged in the conversation, to share their perspectives through appropriate civic channels, and to continue demonstrating the value they see in this institution. Community voices matter in shaping long-term planning decisions, and thoughtful, respectful engagement strengthens the process for everyone involved.

During this period of discussion, our priority is stability. Stability for our animals, our staff, and our community. We will continue operating responsibly, communicating through established governan by @capronparkzoo

It's National Service Dog Day! Only trained service dogs (and miniature horses) are allowed at the zoo because federal law classifies them as necessary for people with disabilities, while regular pets are excluded to protect the safety and health of both zoo animals and visitors.

Under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), public accommodations like zoos permit trained service dogs that perform specific tasks for individuals with disabilities. Emotional support animals, comfort pets, and therapy animals do not have these same public access rights because they lack individual task training.

Why are there parts of a zoo that a service animal may not be allowed? The scent or presence of a trained canine (or minature horse) can severely agitate some zoo species that view these animals as natural predators or prey (such as big cats, wolves, or hoofed animals.)

Upon arrival on every visit, handlers must check in with admissions. The handler is solely responsible for the care and control of their animal. Other guests should remember that these animals are working and should not approach them without express permission of the handler.

The safety and welfare of all animals, visitors, and staff are paramount to everyone here at the zoo. We hope that each visit will be a very enriching experience for all, and we will to continue to support these healthy environments at Capron Park Zoo. by @capronparkzoo

Happy International Red Panda Day! Come celebrate at Capron Park Zoo and visit our own Red Pandas Pabu and Suni. We'd like to help raise awareness and support conservation efforts for these beautiful, endangered animals. With numerous threats to their habitat and a decreasing population it is imperative we provide education on these wonderful animals to further conservation efforts.

Red Panda Encounter tickets available on our website!
