Self promotion is something I always shy away from, for some reason I always want the work to speak for itself and be found on its own, rather than myself sharing it over and over. But this piece is a favorite of mine and something I am extremely proud of and very humbled to have it shared on @nowness and 1.4 @_onepointfour , two publications I’ve admired for years.
I’ve thanked my crew for this a hundred times and I’m thanking them again once more and promise to share more of my work.
Also added a few beautiful clips that haven’t been seen enough.

The cameras and the crew behind them.
@richhamadp was the DP but he couldn’t be everywhere at once so each vehicle was assigned a camera and an operator. Our final camera count was around:
2 - IMAX
2 - Arri Alexa 35mm
2 - RED Monstro
1 - RED Infrared
1 - DJI Inspire 3 (RIP)

This is many years in the making but I can finally share my first book East / West. A collection of images spanning nearly 10 years of python hunting, retirement living, offshore fishing and small town life across South Florida.

I never set out to document my home state but over the years I found myself shooting all of my film down south and unknowingly building a body of work in these micro communities I found myself drawn to.

Billie Jean King. The Queen 👑

This was an incredible day. I’ve grown up watching tennis and playing a bit, but spending a few hours with the woman who not only changed the sport of tennis, but also changed all of sports by fighting and advocating for inclusion, equal pay and rights among a thousand other things, was an amazing experience.

Watching her volley with her partner (in a denim jacket and signature glasses) and listening to stories from tournaments throughout the years and seeing her clear passion for the game was inspiring to be around.

I could go on about this day for hours because I was blown away by her and fully fanning out. Thanks for the memories and being amazing in front of the camera @billiejeanking

Of all of the celebrities I’ve photographed I’ve never asked anyone for an autograph, but at the end of the day, after chatting with her partner for a while and telling her my mom is a huge fan, she tossed me a signed tennis ball which is now a family heirloom. by @capt_johnston

Earlier this year I spent a week in Iceland filming a short film. But these photos are from the mighty mighty Ricoh GRIIIx, mostly shot from the passenger seat driving all across Snaefellsnes. taken in Snæfellsnes Peninsula, Iceland by @capt_johnston

Two frame grabs to closeout this Stormbound series.

So much of the footage I shot on this project was chasing hurricanes and tornadoes. We stood in torrential rain while powerlines and transformers exploded around us and ran for cover on dirt roads as winds whipped past 70mph.

But these are two of my favorite moments I shot.

The first frame shows Jeff Gammons’ scar on his chest from one of many lifesaving surgeries decades back. This single frame, to me, fully captures Jeff Gammons. Throughout all of the surgeries in his life, he’s pushed through to do what he loves most and that’s to chase and document storms. Also the overall darkness of the frame with the hurricane charm just picking up some of the light from the bedside lamp and subtle wave tattoo on his chest really help to tell who this man is.

The second frame was during blue hour on the edge of Lake Okeechobee. We saw a rocket launch, several gators and what looked like a boar that a bear or panther got ahold of (typical Florida stuff) but the craziest part was how thick the air was with mosquitoes. Im convinced half of the grain in this image is actually mosquitoes. But I’m always a sucker for a blue hour / last light moment and throw in a headlamp and to me it’s a perfect combination.

One of these days I’ll pull some clips together. taken in Lake Okeechobee by @capt_johnston

A lot of storm chasing is hoping, waiting, and watching the weather slowly change. For us, most storms developed in the late afternoon so many morning were spent driving and midday was loitering in gas stations all across The Great Plains.
Camera prep was done at the breakfast buffet or on the tailgate and somewhere deep in a journal I tallied the dozens of Red Bulls, Celsius, Clif Bars, RX bars and other random snacks we ate for lunch and the communal McDonalds or Dominos pizza we all share in the lobby of some hotel late at night swapping stories of what we saw that day.
These “down” moments allowed me to ask questions and learn more about the storms we’re chasing and gave everyone some time out of the cars to prep and stretch by @capt_johnston

The days would turn from day to night in a moment as the storms built and rolled through.

When they would pass and we’d discover it was still daytime we were typically greeted with stunning orange skies and full rainbows reaching across the horizon by @capt_johnston

I was in awe of the Great Plains and the storms that we came across.

Quiet moments on the edge of storm just before the weather takes a turn.

These moments were my favorite. Where the wind instantly picks up and feel 10 degrees cooler and you can see the clouds moving above you, they feel so low you could almost touch them.

These moments are where years of experience come down to split second decisions. Whether to race down that dirt road or keep straight, to stay and get the shot or get in the car and run like hell while you still can.

It seemingly felt like a hundred possibilities could stem from every micro decision and we could enter directly into the path of a tornado or be left to watch it from afar.

It’s about time I started to share my images from Stormbound, the IMAX documentary feature I worked on the last few year.

But we can’t start the story without introducing the main characters, Jeff and Sara Gammons (@stormvisuals + @sara.gammons )
Besides the fact that Jeff is a cancer survivor, multiple kidney transplant receiver, (his latest from his wife Sara) and a dedicated storm chaser who’s been through 100+ hurricanes and tornadoes.

They’re also the most kind and welcoming people I’ve had the pleasure of getting to know. What started out as a quick afternoon with a borrowed cameras shooting some “b-roll” turned into several epic adventures and their story on the IMAX screen by @capt_johnston
