TRAUM(a) begins with a broken word. In German, Traum means dream, Trauma a wound. One letter separates imagination from flesh. The work exists in this gap—where a dream becomes body.
It was not the first time a scalpel crossed my skin, but it was the first time I chose it. After years of therapy, fear, and waiting, I made a decision that marked a second birth.
I am Captain John, a non-binary photographer based in Berlin. My body is a shifting form, already present beneath the surface, insisting on becoming visible. Physical change is only the threshold; the real transition happens in the gaze, where a body is read and inhabited. Photography becomes a survival tool—an act of witnessing through diary and phototherapy.
TRAUM(a) is an archive of transition: a refusal of fixed identity, a space where the body is always emerging.

In Mexico City, I encounter Adgehovah DG, a conceptual artist who lives as a “puppy” and embodies fluid, non-normative forms of identity. Their domestic space is dense and intimate, mixing everyday objects, family relics, and aesthetic codes. Nothing is separated into categories: identity, fetish, and lived experience coexist. They resist explanation rather than offering it. This project becomes a portrait of shifting embodiment and chosen kinship—where identity is performed, inhabited, and shared.

A beautiful evening bringing together upcycling art, photography, fashion, furniture design, live music and contemporary creativity.

Thank you @fafrart70, @fadeoutlabel and @paola_kubes for having me and for creating this space where art, sustainability and community meet.

Organic Geometric 0.3 is a mixed-media installation inspired by the transformation of Lichtenberg, connecting its industrial past with a vibrant contemporary culture. Through geometric forms, striking colours and reused materials, the three designers transform “waste” into new objects, stories and possibilities — exploring sustainability, creativity and the art of living.

Twenty years ago today, Peaches released Impeach My Bush - a call to revolution recorded across two cities, Berlin / LA, with some of the most fearless artists alive. @joanjett @joshhomme @bethditto @feistmusic @jd_samson
NME called it “a near-perfect distillation of Peaches.” Wired said she had “old school synth loops, gritty drum samples, and a mouth that puts Lenny Bruce to shame.”
And “Boys Wanna Be Her”? That went on to become the theme for Full Frontal with Samantha Bee on TBS.

focused on inclusivity and upcycling for a non-binary future — an explosive collaboration is born, blending photography, art, and fashion.

The TOP Capsule Collection, created in collaboration with FADE OUT Label, was developed to create space and visibility for trans and non-binary bodies.
The project stems from Traum(a), a photographic work on gender-affirming top surgery, and translates images, marks, and bodily memories into a wearable practice.
The scars are not hidden: they are pride, transformation, and self-determination. The collection makes them visible and exposes them to the social gaze, reversing the dynamics of looking and being looked at.
A queer gesture of exposure, pride, and physical empathy.

TRAUM(a) begins with a broken word.
In German, Traum means dream. Trauma is a wound. One letter separates imagination from flesh. The project exists in this gap: when a dream turns into body.

It was not the first time a scalpel crossed my skin. It was the first time I chose it. After years of therapy, fear, and waiting, I made the most important decision of my life. I faced not only physical pain, but a society that continues to refuse non-binary visibility.

My body is resistant matter and I feel like a piece of marble: the form already exists beneath the surface. It pushes outward, insists, claims space. Before flesh, I am form. A form demanding emergence.

April 23, 2025 marks my second birth.

I am Captain John, a non-binary photographer living in Berlin for 15 years. Physical change is only the visible threshold. The real passage happens in the gaze, where a body is inhabited and it is read.
Photography accompanies this process. Through diary practice and phototherapy, the act of photographing interrupts pain and makes it observable. A survival gesture.

TRAUM(a) is an archive of permanent transition, a departure from the colonialism of the body that demands coherence and opposition, a space where no one exists.
