Found a real one out there! Smashed my biggest ever Mahi by more than 20 pounds for my first true Florida Slammer, couldn’t think of a better fish to kick off Mahi season. Captain Mike before we left word for word: “Yo if we see a frigate by himself he’s gonna be on a big fish”. Let’s just say Mr Frigate definitely was on a big fish 😅

Featured here are two of the rarest fish that can be caught in Florida, the Yellowfin Bass, and the Stout Beardfish. The bad weather brought us some good luck and we put a truly unbelievable collection of rare deep sea fish in the box, including 2 Yellowfin Bass, 2 Stout Beardfish, a large Barrelfish, an Alfonsino, 2 Royal Flagfin, 4 Queen Snapper, and more.

You know it’s gonna be an epic day when you bring up a highly elusive Alfonsino on the first drop! Can’t beat catching one of these beauties and this was my first one in the backyard!

Additional note for fish ID nerds: I figured this would be a Splendid Alfonsino because that’s typically what people refer to them as here in Florida when they catch one. But it’s indeed (Beryx decadactylus) which is just referred to as “Alfonisno” or “Imperador”. The Splendid Alfonsino (Beryx splendens) has less than 16 dorsal rays, and the front base of the anal fin aligns with the rear base of the dorsal fin. As you can see here the front base of the anal fin meets the middle of the dorsal fin which is the easiest way to confirm an ID without counting rays along with simply measuring the fish as the Splendid Alfonsino doesn’t exceed 22 inches, where as the Imperador is rarely caught smaller than that. After reviewing dozens of reported catches off Floridas coast I’ve yet to find a Splendid Alfonsino. The Splendid Alfonsino is typically found in large numbers of smaller fish (<18 inches) on massive, ancient volcanic sea mounts, which we simply don’t have off of Florida’s coast, so it’s not that they’re range doesn’t extend through our water but there is no suitable habitat for them to live here. In the Western Atlantic they have been well documented in the New England-Corner Rise Sea Mount Chain which is far deeper, further offshore, and spans for many miles. by @captmikemilz
