Part of keeping a creative practice alive is giving yourself permission to explore.

In this season, I needed something that allowed me to slow down and embrace the unexpected.

Excited to see where this new chapter leads me.

Over the past little while, my photography practice has gradually evolved toward digital creation, resulting in more time spent in front of a screen and less time creating with my hands.

While I love where this journey has taken my work, I’ve also found myself craving a more tactile way of creating. That curiosity has opened the door to some exciting new processes that I’m beginning to incorporate into my practice, and I can’t wait to share them with you.

Stay tuned for a few behind-the-scenes updates. 👀

Each piece in this series goes through a few (sometimes ugly) stages before everything finally comes together. There’s a lot of experimenting with colour and layering before I’m ready to pull that final print.

It’s always exciting to see a piece come to life, but this one really clicked once it was framed! I was very intentional about choosing a frame that would give the collage room to breathe, leaving space for the layers to cast their own shadows and add another dimension to the work. Sometimes, those final finishing touches make all the difference. ✨

Every print in this series is the result of many, many experiments, adjustments, and honestly, a fair amount of crossing my fingers and hoping for the best.

Because this is a hands-on process, no two prints are ever exactly alike. The amount of paint on the plate, how the layers interact, even the humidity in the room can all change the outcome.

And that’s one of my favourite parts. Each print holds a little bit of the unexpected. As I move from one subject to the next, the process always seems to show me something new.

I hope you find a little something unexpected in them, too.

It’s finally time to share some of the completed pieces in my latest series, Welcome to Galt.

Meet the Old Post Office - This was one of the first buildings to catch my eye when I moved to Galt. The combination of heritage limestone and the modern glass addition makes it unlike anything else I’ve seen before.

Each piece in Welcome to Galt starts with a photograph I’ve taken. From there, I transfer the image onto a gelli plate, where I can play with the colours, layer in unexpected elements, and change the way the building exists on the page.

Consider this series a small invitation to look at your surroundings with a renewed sense of curiosity. To consider what happens when we take something familiar and give ourselves permission to see it differently.

Here’s to looking a little closer. 👀 taken in Cambridge, Ontario by @capturedby.melissa

It’s funny how the things designed to make our lives easier and faster can sometimes be the very things that take the joy out of them. Is there something in your life you’ve been feeling the need to de-optimize?

Yes, this seems this is what happens when you have an analog art practice. 😅

I’m still getting used to all the materials that come with creating by hand rather than a screen. My studio has officially become a bit of a mess, but there’s something I’m really enjoying about having all these possibilities within reach.

Here’s hoping I find more shelf space soon. 🤞 taken in Cambridge, Ontario by @capturedby.melissa

Working with an analog process has taught me a lot about accepting imperfections and finding the beauty in unexpected outcomes.

I’m a bit of a perfectionist by nature (happy Virgo season to those who celebrate 😜), and I’ve always found comfort in the ability to perfect a digital image down to the pixel. However, there’s a little bit of magic that disappears in the making process when nothing is left to chance. So in an effort to recapture this magic of the past, you’ll find me in the studio overanalyzing crooked prints and slightly smudged transfers until further notice.

A sneak peek into what’s been happening in the studio lately.

Exploring a more analog process has been a little challenging for someone who likes to keep a tidy space. I feel like my work area is always shrinking since it’s constantly covered with test prints, ripped paper, a wet palette, or another package of new art supplies that I’m convinced will finally bring everything together. 😅

Anyway, still figure it out..

okay, but seriously, adding artwork to your space is often the one thing that brings everything together. It’s an opportunity to show your personality and personal taste. It’s a doesn’t need to be expensive, it doesn’t need to match everything in your home, it just needs to speak to you.

when was the last time you bought art?
