Sometimes your next opportunity is just one conversation away.

When McKellar Proffitt found out his mom's local newspaper might need someone behind the camera, he asked a simple question that opened the door to trying something new.

Not every opportunity comes from a big client, a perfect portfolio, or a carefully planned career move. Sometimes it starts with being curious, asking questions, and being willing to give something a shot.

Ever look at another creator’s shot and think, “How did they KNOW to be there?!”

McKellar Proffitt talks about those unpredictable moments that somehow get captured perfectly. Is it luck, experience, or just knowing where to put yourself when the action happens?

Sometimes being in the right place at the right time is a skill of its own.

You get into a rhythm of only putting out bangers. But what about the shots that don't make the cut? 📸

As photographers and filmmakers, we're our own toughest critics. We're looking at lighting, composition, sharpness, and whether a shot is good enough to share.

But Ricardo Barbosa shares a moment when someone told him one of his photos was the best photo they'd ever had of themselves.

A reminder that we're not always seeing our work through the same lens as the people we're capturing.

What you consider an average shot might be a moment someone remembers forever.

The biggest mistake you can make as a sports creator? Only chasing the biggest events. 👀

In Episode 47, Ricardo Barbosa breaks down why the smaller stages can be just as valuable as the big ones.

Local events give you something major productions often don't: the freedom to experiment, take risks, try new shots, and develop your own creative style.

Because when you're on assignment for a major brand or capturing a once-in-a-lifetime moment, that's not always the time to figure things out.

The big stages are where you deliver. The small stages are where you develop.

Imagine showing up to work with people you can't even have a conversation with. 🌍

For Ricardo Barbosa, working with fellow creators in Turkey meant navigating a language barrier. He didn't speak Turkish, and two of his partners didn't speak English.

But what stood out wasn't the language barrier. It was how welcoming the European creator community was and how quickly he realized that, no matter where you're from, creators face many of the same challenges.

Different languages, different backgrounds, but a shared understanding of what it takes to do this work.

Plot twist: The cutest moment of the podcast had nothing to do with photography. 🥹

JT introducing his little one to Ricardo might just be our favorite moment of the episode.

The conversations are great, but sometimes it's the moments in between that steal the show. ❤️

You can have an incredible shot: perfectly framed, perfectly timed, something you’re genuinely proud of... and it still might not belong.

Rick Jones talks about the difference between using great shots to tell the story and letting those shots become the story.

Sometimes the best creative decision is making sure the shot supports the moment instead of distracting from it.

Expensive gear doesn’t automatically make better work.

Filmmaker Rick Jones breaks down the difference between buying something because you think you should have it vs investing in gear because you already know exactly how you want to use it.

The gear should serve the vision, not create it for you.
