Felt like a fitting little clip for Ned’s birthday. I’ve faced a lot of loss in my life but this one has just hit so hard still even a month later. I miss my grandfather so much. I was able to speak at his celebration of life, and I’m attaching that below and continued in the comments so I can save it to look back on.

It feels particularly unfair to stand up here and summarize a lifetime in a way that honors my grandfather, who was so good at telling stories himself. To sum up decades of laughter and tales that colored my life, and so deeply shaped who I am today feels like an impossible task.

I feel the need to explain before continuing, that while his name was Harold or Harry to many of you, when told he was going to be a grandfather, he opted for a name that he felt made himself sound less old then the standard grampy or grandpa. He had us call him, Fred - a nod to his father, whose name also was not Fred but that’s a tale for another day.

To know my grandfather was to know Marblehead. And Marblehead to me, is where childhood never dies. There is a palpable warm safety of a community that shows up for each other, despite the soccer moms who do really seem hellbent on running me over on the way to get my morning coffee. There is still a playfulness here, that seems to have been lost in so many other places. It’s a place where kids choose jumping off docks and adventuring outside over video games or sitting on their phones - a giddy laughter is hiding around the corners of many of the winding streets. by @carainthesun

I’m struggling to find the words to honor you. My grandfather - who we called Fred because you didn’t want to sound old and your Dad called everyone Fred. You made the world magic. I bought my house so I could soak up more time with you and Nani. Hear the stories a little more. Hear you laugh at your own jokes. You went to almost every performance I did. No small feat when your grandkid is a theater kid. You would always find one more wave to smash The Ripple down on and send me into a fit of giggles, and when you couldn’t catch a wave you’d spin the boat in a circle to make one. When I didn’t want to talk to anyone you’d always find a way. Always knew the right song to sing to cheer me up when boys were mean. You were my date for the Fourth of July more days than I can count. Id give anything to rewind the clock, go on a boat ride and land back at the yacht club for a burger and a Shirley temple, with half of Marblehead stopping over to say hi to you. I know I’ll be longing for one more story for the rest of my life. I love you so much, Fred. by @carainthesun

If you ever had a asthma attack before your short of breath S.O.B shortness of breath,
you wheezing (breath sound) the only thing
you trying to do is get some air.
You don’t care about no basketball game,
you don’t care about what’s on T.V.,
you don’t care about nobody calling you,
you don’t care about a party.
The only thing you care about
when you trying to breathe is to get some fresh air.
That’s it!
And when you get to the point
where all you wanna do is
be is successful as bad as
you wanna breathe then you will be successful.
And I’m here to tell you that number one,
most of you say you wanna be successful
but you don’t want it bad, you just kind of want it.
You don’t want it bad than you wanna party.
You don’t want it as much as you want to be cool.
Most of you don’t want success as much as you want sleep.
Some of you lost sleep more than you lost success.
And I’m here to tell you today,
if your going to be successful
you gotta be willing to give up sleep.
You gotta be willing to work with 3 hours of sleep
2 hours of sleep, if you really wanna be successful.
Some day your gonna have to stay up 3 days in a row.
Because if you go to sleep you might miss
the opportunity to be successful.
