What is inside artery plaque?

Go beneath the artery lining to see retained lipid, foam cells, a necrotic core, collagen and calcium. Then see how inward growth, outward remodeling and cap rupture affect the artery. Plaque composition and organization matter alongside narrowing.

CO2: An Antioxidant You Make Yourself?

Part 5 explores how CO2 and bicarbonate can alter reaction pathways and oxidant targets. Changing oxidative chemistry is not the same as eliminating oxidation.

A rat hypoxia experiment and an isolated red-cell membrane experiment provide specific experimental clues. Selective mitochondrial cardiolipin protection remains a mechanistic hypothesis with limited direct evidence.

What happens when cardiolipin oxidizes?

Part 4 of the lipid-peroxidation series follows damage to mitochondrial lipid architecture, altered respiratory function, oxidative feedback and impaired ATP production. It also explores cardiolipin's role in cytochrome-c mobilization during apoptotic signaling.

These are context-dependent processes. Cardiolipin oxidation alone does not mean a cell inevitably undergoes apoptosis.

Your mitochondria need this fat: cardiolipin.

Part 3 of the lipid-peroxidation series explores the four-tailed phospholipid that helps support inner mitochondrial membrane organization, cristae architecture and respiratory protein interactions.

ATP production depends on more than enzymes. The membrane is part of the machine.

Next: what happens when cardiolipin starts to oxidize?

Just had a great time in Sacramento, CA, joining Mark Bell and his cohost Nsima Inyang on the podcast!

@marksmellybell /
@nsimainyang /

Super nice guys, and we went really in depth about my book, The Carbonated Body, CO₂ therapy, and the role carbon dioxide plays in our bodies. I really appreciated their curiosity and the opportunity to dig into the science beyond the usual quick talking points.

Thanks, Mark and Nsima, for having me and for such a great conversation! Looking forward to sharing the episode with everyone when it’s out. by @carbogenetics

Why Polyunsaturated Fats Are So Dangerous

Part 2 of the lipid-peroxidation series: why multiple double bonds create vulnerable sites for radical-driven oxidation.

Follow the chemistry from stearic and oleic acid through linoleic acid, arachidonic acid, EPA and DHA. The key comparison is the number of bis-allylic sites, not simply omega-3 versus omega-6.

Chemical susceptibility is not a ranking of dietary health effects. Membrane composition, antioxidant defenses and lipid repair also matter.

Next in Part 3: cardiolipin, the four-tailed fat in your mitochondria.

One radical can start a chain reaction through a cell membrane.

Lipid peroxidation transfers radical damage from one lipid to the next. As oxidized lipids accumulate, membrane organization can change, and secondary products such as 4-HNE and MDA can carry the damage beyond the membrane.

Atherosclerosis Has an Oxygen Problem?

Macrophages inside arterial plaque can run short of oxygen, even near oxygenated blood. A mouse study asked what happens when that environment changes.

Carbogen (95% oxygen, 5% carbon dioxide) reduced plaque hypoxia. With daily exposure for four weeks, efferocytosis increased 36%, apoptotic-cell content fell 50%, and necrotic-core expansion was 37% lower than in air-treated mice.

Separate short-exposure blood measurements also showed a marked drop in lactate. The study does not establish that this lactate change caused the improvement in cell clearance.

Cancer: Genetic Mutations or Environment?

Mutations can be powerful drivers of cancer. But could changes in and around the cell sometimes begin earlier?

Cellular stress can contribute to DNA damage and genomic instability. In a specific 3D breast-cell model, altering cell-matrix signaling restored more organized, growth-suppressed behavior without genetic correction. That does not prove the environment always comes first.

This episode explores a hypothesis: in some cancers, cellular and environmental disruption may precede genetic changes, with both becoming part of a feedback process.

Part 4 of our cancer metabolism series.

What changed in and around the cell before those mutations appeared?

AI-assisted scientific animation; molecular structures are illustrative.
