My father, Elliot Carby Tuckwell, was born and raised in the Barossa Valley of SA. The eldest son of a poultry farmer, he studied as a Botanist then left Australia for the Territory of Papua and New Guinea to work surveying the forests of the highlands. He met my mother, a Kiwi nurse, and my sister and I were born in Port Moresby. We returned to Australia soon after PNG gained its independence.

My parents were called expats — it’s a noun loaded with privilege. They were part of a (benevolent) colonial occupation of the country I was born in, a place that had endured differing colonial control throughout its modern history. Dad cared deeply for the land and the place, he respected the people whose traditional home it was and was very conscious we were guests, but I know many of his colleagues and the administration of the time were motivated mainly by sovereign self-interest and profit. I think about this colonial settler mentality and its inherent entitlement in the context of the world today — how it simply defies belief that we still tolerate it, or rather, fail to prevent its proliferation.

My father passed on to me a love of nature and a respect for life as cyclical, that we are just another species who will eventually all be reclaimed by the earth and that preserving humanity was our enduring binding energy.

He left us 15 years ago on the 15th of June 2011, aged 77.

sniffing epoxy resin and pondering the beauty of catalytic reactions

this project was catalytic in both chemistry and creativity…ignited after a collaboration with Matt Willey a few years ago when we massaged a classic Mini Cooper S race car. @mini dug it and asked if we would join forces with them to create two custom JCW Minis: the 2025 J01 Electric and the 2025 F66 Petrol. When the scope expanded to the form and physical design of the cars, Matt towed his mate Piotr Woronkowicz, an industrial designer and lifelong car enthusiast, onto the wave to help shape the project.

the process was collaborative. Four studios—@bmwgroupdesignworks in Los Angeles and Munich, @deusexmachina in Sydney, and Matt and P in New York—working together across time zones and disciplines to bring the project to life. The project unfolded with the energy and enthusiasm that only comes from riffing with friends without a deliverable other than we should want to steal these when it’s all over.

the 2025 F66, named The Machina, highlights raw engineering and racing heritage. Its exterior combines a red, white, and black palette in matte and gloss finishes with perforated aluminum panels inspired by weight-saving techniques, exposed seams that celebrate fabrication, widened fenders with visible hardware, and rally-style lighting. the J01 Electric, called The Skeg, took inspiration from hydrodynamic theory and surfboard construction. Translucent fiberglass body panels reduce weight, improve aerodynamics, and allow light to filter into the cabin. Straps integrated into the roof and interior provide a built-in system for securing loads.

Respectfully, Deus had other ideas 🔧

We already knew the MINI John Cooper Works had plenty of character. @deusexmachina saw room for even more. With a shared underdog spirit and a healthy disregard for convention, The Machina took on a personality all of its own.

Pentagram x Deus Ex Machina
Last weekend opening!
