With everything going on in the world, things like this actually give me hope...
That's human ingenuity, dedication and true spirit of exploration, right there. Happening right now. Look out at the moon tonight... this is where these 4 pioneers are slingshotting round, right now. The furthest from humanity, any human ambassadors have ever been.
Sitting in their tincan, far above the world.
Fly well.

Lovely day at Staithes Arts & Heritage Festival. So much to see and do. Talks on Dark Matter & Gertrude Bell, so many talented artists, so many tiny alleyways, and *that* big hill! by @card_and_pixel

Just doing my bit to bring awareness to folk pop history has forgotten (look at me being all Greg Jenner!).
Gertrude Bell 1868-1926 was quite the remarkable human being. Not without her controversy (like anyone involved in the history of the middle east) Gertrude was born into iron and steel money in the North East, but used her resources and position to do... everything.
What she didn't know, she taught herself. Any one of her achievements would have made her a remarkable achiever, but Gertrude had a true sense of squeezing the most out of life. Her achievements scarely fit in a FB post, but please have a read.
She taught herself mountaineering and then climbed 7 alpine peaks in record time, many of which had never been navigated before. Oh, and her skirt was too inconvenient so she did most of it in her no doubt copious underwear.
She wanted to understand archaeology, so she went to college, spent years in the middle east, taught herself arabic, befriended most of the main leaders of the region, supported women's education in the arab nations... oh... and helped *define* the arab nations including modern Iraq and Jordan (hence some of the controversy, she is now less fondly remembered by Iraqi Kurds) and ended up at the 1921 Cairo conference as the only female delegate, entirely because she was considered the foremost expert in the entire region, and yes, that's TE Lawrence and Winston Churchill in that same photo.
Oh, and she founded a museum of antiquities in the middle east that still exists today.
Despite her achievements and remarkable life and close relationship with TE Lawrence is not mentioned *anywhere* in the 600 pages of Lawrence's biography.
So here's to you Gertrude. At least there's one IG post about you. You may have been of your time, born into money, and controversial in today's political climate, but no-one could ever accuse you of having wasted your days.
(My thanks to Gordon Hetherington's brilliant lecture at Staithes Festival of Arts and Heritage yesterday for my introduction to this remarkable individual.) by @card_and_pixel
