If you would like to join on a organised event for the Campus Nature Challenge, we have two coming up on the 23rd September: 📍From 12-1pm at the Redwood Building: Nature enthusiasts in the School of Pharmacy will be teaming up for an hour to map out every single bit of nature hiding around the Redwood Building's green spaces. Whether you are a total plant nerd, an insect enthusiast, or just someone who likes taking walks outside, lets join us and post the results in iNaturalist! The goal is super simple: see how many different plants, bugs, birds, and fungi we can find and document together, and record it. People outside of the school are also welcome to join! https://www.inaturalist.org/projects/inat-together-cardiff-university-redwood-building-bioblitz 📍From 1-3pm at Bute Park: Join us for the Campus Nature Challenge and get to know your new local park Want to get to know the nature on your doorstop? Cardiff University are taking part in the Campus Nature Challenge! Come and explore local nature on a guided spring walk with likeminded people. We will be contributing to global nature recording as part of this session by recording species we encounter. Suitable for all no prior nature experience is required open to students and local residents. Where? We will meet at the outside area of the Bute Park Visitor Centre (Secret Garden cafe). What3Words: ///twin.kicks.reds Transport: We encourage you to walk, cycle or take public transport to the site. Short walk from the centre of Cardiff. Cycle Racks are available. 🌿 Help us spot nature on campus and Bute Park and get to the top of the leaderboard! 🌿 After getting 2nd place 🥈back in April, Cardiff University is now taking part in the Global Campus Nature Challenge – September, and we’d love you to join in if you can. Campus Nature Challenge – September When: Friday 18 – Sunday 27 September 2026 (You can take part whenever it suits you, even if it’s just a quick walk or a passing moment) What is the Campus Nature Challenge? It’s a global bioblitz, where universities around the world record the wildlife on their campuses over a short period of time. At Cardiff University, that means noticing and recording the plants, trees, birds, mammals, insects, fungi, etc. you come across on or around campus whether they’re big or small, common or unusual. This time, we are joining forces with our friends from @cardiff.lnp , so recording in Bute Park alongside our campuses will also count towards Cardiff University’s final tally. Find out more online: https://campusnaturechallenge.org/ How to join in at Cardiff University: 1. Download the free iNaturalist app on your phone and create an account 2. Visit the Cardiff University Campus Nature Challenge project page on iNaturalist: https://www.inaturalist.org/projects/cardiff-university-sept-2026-campus-nature-challenge 3. Join the Cardiff University Campus Nature Challenge project 4. Record any wildlife you spot on campus and Bute Park during the challenge dates (capture clear images or sounds of wild organisms) You don’t need to set aside lots of time or be a nature expert, even one observation on your way between buildings, on your lunch breaks, or during a weekend wander through Bute Park makes a difference 📸🌱. iNaturalist has an inbuilt AI tool that suggests species identification based on the photos you take, and these are later confirmed by a community of scientists and enthusiasts. Every record helps build a better picture of biodiversity across our estate and contributes to an international dataset. Take part if you can, when you can! #campusnaturechallenge by @cardiff.lnp

Following the wildflower planting sessions with schools earlier this year, we rejoined students to survey and ‘bioblitz’ wildflower patches and forest school areas. We learned about wildflower ID, tree ID and looked at many bugs and beasties across Splott and Adamsdown. It was fantastic to see so many young people fascinated by what can be found near their own doorstep.🌻🐝☀️ Yn dilyn y sesiynau plannu blodau gwyllt gydag ysgolion yn gynharach eleni, fe wnaethom ailymuno â myfyrwyr i arolygu a gwneud 'bioblitz' ar ardaloedd blodau gwyllt ac ysgol goedwig. Fe wnaethom ddysgu sut i adnabod blodau gwyllt, coed ac edrych ar lawer o bryfed a chwilod ar draws y Sblot ac Adamsdown. Roedd yn wych gweld cymaint o bobl ifanc yn cael eu cyfareddu gan yr hyn sydd i'w gael ger eu cartrefi eu hunain. 🌻🐝☀️ by @cardiff.lnp
Thank you to all of the volunteers who joined us for the launch of the meadow guardians scheme for 2026! Despite the drizzle volunteers worked with ID guides during a guided walk to learn about the species of wildflower they might find in meadows across the city. The scheme is still open to signups- you just need to find an area of ‘one-cut’ grassland owned by CC, let us know where it is, and then survey its wildflowers as many times as you’d like/ can over the seasons. The results tell us a lot about the impact different types of grassland management can have and help us keep an eye on many more meadows than our small team can handle alone! It is beginner friendly, just tell us what you know and what you see. Get in touch to find out more biodiversity.team@cardiff.gov.uk. 🐝🌷☀️ Diolch i'r holl wirfoddolwyr a ymunodd â ni i lansio'r cynllun gwarcheidwaid dolydd ar gyfer 2026! Er gwaethaf y glaw mân gweithiodd gwirfoddolwyr gyda chanllawiau adnabod yn ystod taith dywys i ddysgu am y rhywogaethau o flodau gwyllt y gallent ddod o hyd iddyn nhw mewn dolydd ledled y ddinas. Mae'r cynllun yn dal i fod ar agor i gofrestru - bydd angen i chi ddod o hyd i un darn o laswelltir 'un toriad' sy'n eiddo i CC, rhoi gwybod i ni ble mae, ac yna arolygu ei flodau gwyllt gymaint o weithiau ag y dymunwch/ gallwch yn ystod y tymhorau. Mae'r canlyniadau'n dweud llawer wrthym am yr effaith y gall mathau gwahanol o reoli glaswelltir ei chael ac yn ein helpu ni i gadw llygad ar lawer mwy o ddolydd nag y gall ein tîm bach ni ymdopi â nhw ar ei ben ei hun! Mae'n addas i ddechreuwyr, dim ond rhoi gwybod i ni beth rydych chi'n ei wybod a'r hyn rydych chi'n ei weld sydd angen i chi ei wneud. Cysylltwch â ni i ddarganfod mwy yn biodiversity.team@cardiff.gov.uk🐝🌷☀️ by @cardiff.lnp
This session will take you through how to identify the habitats of dormice and the signs of dormouse activity. During this workshop with a Wildlife Trust South West Wales officer we will learn about suitable dormouse habitats and the surveying methods that can be used to track them. After this training there is an opportunity to participate in our 3-month survey which will take place over the summer, we need volunteers to help us collect data. These results feed back into important data collection for an endangered species. This is an outdoor event so please wear suitable shoes and clothing. All ages and abilities welcome but please let us know if you need any particular support. Location: Plymouth Great Woods Meeting near the entrance to the woods at: 81 Frank Road. We encourage you to walk, cycle or take public transport to the site. Ymwybyddiaeth o Bathewod Bydd y sesiwn hon yn eich arwain ar sut i adnabod cynefinoedd pathewod ac arwyddion gweithgarwch pathewod. Yn ystod y gweithdy hwn gyda swyddog Ymddiriedolaeth Bywyd Gwyllt De a Gorllewin Cymru byddwn yn dysgu am gynefinoedd addas i bathewod a'r dulliau arolygu y gellir eu defnyddio i'w tracio. Ar ôl yr hyfforddiant hwn mae cyfle i gymryd rhan yn ein harolwg 3 mis a fydd yn cael ei gynnal dros yr haf gan y bydd angen gwirfoddolwyr arnom i’n helpu i gasglu data. Defnyddir y canlyniadau hyn wrth gasglu data pwysig ar gyfer rhywogaeth sydd mewn perygl. Bydd y digwyddiad hwn yn yr awyr agored, felly gwisgwch esgidiau a dillad addas. Mae croeso i bob oedran a gallu ond rhowch wybod i ni os oes angen unrhyw gymorth penodol arnoch. Lleoliad: Coedwig Fawr Plymouth Cyfarfod ger y fynedfa i'r goedwig yn: 81 Frank Road. Our annual dormouse surveys using footprint tunnels have kicked off, we are excited to see what we can find, or what finds the tunnels! We use natural materials at each tunnel entrance so that if it is used by a mammal, or a bird or bug, they leave behind a footprint on the paper for us to identify. It is a great hands-off way of finding out what is within the woods that we may not often see.🌸🐞🌻🐛 Mae ein harolygon pathewod blynyddol gan ddefnyddio twneli ôl troed wedi cychwyn, rydym yn gyffrous i weld beth allwn ddod o hyd iddo, neu beth sy'n dod o hyd i'r twneli! Rydym yn defnyddio deunyddiau naturiol wrth bob mynedfa twnnel felly os caiff ei defnyddio gan famal, neu aderyn neu chwilen, bydd yn gadael ôl troed ar ôl ar y papur i ni ei adnabod. Mae'n ffordd lled braich o weld y pethau o fewn y goedwig nad ydym yn eu gweld yn aml.🌸🐞🌻🐛 by @cardiff.lnp
