🌺🪷 Shubh Sharadiya Navratri 2026! 🪷🌺

October 11–19, 2026 | 🙏🏽❤️

Nine sacred nights. Nine manifestations of Maa Durga. Nine opportunities to honor the Divine Feminine within and around us.

Navratri reminds us that strength does not always roar, healing is not always gentle, and transformation often requires us to release what no longer serves our highest good.

May Maa Durga bless us with the courage to establish boundaries, the wisdom to honor our ancestors, the compassion to nurture ourselves and others, and the resilience to walk our dharma with grace.

As we celebrate each manifestation of Shakti, may we remember that we can be both fierce and gentle, devoted and independent, rooted in tradition while courageous enough to grow beyond limitation.

May these sacred days bring protection, clarity, prosperity, healing, and renewed purpose to every home and heart.

 Jai Mata Di! 🔱🌺🪔

With love and light, Cardinal Valor ❤️

“What happens in this house stays in this house.”

If you grew up in an Indo-Caribbean household, there's a chance you've heard some version of this.

Growing up, I was taught that family business was supposed to stay within the family. Don't tell people what's happening at home. Don't embarrass the family. Don't give people something to talk about.

And me? I went in the complete opposite direction. 😂 I told everybody EVERYTHING.

Which, looking back, wasn't necessarily healthy either.

But here's something I've been thinking about, especially during Domestic Violence Awareness Month:

There's a difference between privacy and secrecy.

Privacy means having the autonomy to decide what you share, who you share it with, and when.

Secrecy becomes harmful when someone feels they cannot speak about what they're experiencing because they're afraid of embarrassing their family, being blamed, or being seen as disloyal.

And when domestic violence is involved, that silence can become another barrier to getting support.

I love how much our Caribbean communities value family and togetherness. But two things can be true.

We can value family privacy AND recognize that nobody should be expected to hide abuse to protect their family's reputation.

Maybe the lesson shouldn't be “don't tell anybody our business.”

Maybe it should be “learn who your safe people are, and know that you deserve support.”

Because protecting the family's image should never be more important than protecting the people within it.

What messages did you grow up hearing about keeping family business private?

If you or someone you know is experiencing relationship abuse, confidential support and safety-planning resources are available at thehotline.org or 800-799-7233. Consider using a safer device if your online activity may be monitored.

“Maybe she should've kept her mouth shut.”

Let's talk about that statement for a second.

Because why is it that when a woman experiences domestic violence, the conversation sometimes becomes about what SHE did?

What did she say?
Did she provoke him?
Was she being disrespectful?
Why didn't she just stay quiet?

But where is that same energy when it comes to holding the person who used violence accountable?

Growing up Indo-Caribbean, I've heard messages that place a lot of responsibility on women to maintain peace in relationships.

Be respectful. Don't talk back. Keep the family together. Don't embarrass anybody.

But keeping the peace should never mean accepting abuse.

And someone's tone, attitude, disagreement or refusal to comply does not justify another person hitting, threatening or intimidating them.

Conflict is not an excuse for violence.

During Domestic Violence Awareness Month, I want us to examine how we respond when someone discloses abuse.

Are we listening to understand what happened?

Or are we searching for something the survivor could've done differently?

We can love our culture while challenging the messages that excuse harm.

And we can hold people accountable without placing responsibility for their violence on the person experiencing it.

Survivors deserve safety, support and the freedom to make their own decisions.

For confidential support and safety-planning resources, visit thehotline.org or call 800-799-7233.

Growing up Indo-Caribbean, there was SO MUCH emphasis on getting married and having children.

But what about everything else?

What about teaching us consent? Emotional regulation? How to navigate conflict without yelling, intimidation or violence?

What about teaching girls that marriage is a choice rather than an obligation? Or teaching boys that masculinity doesn't entitle them to control their partners?

And what about teaching everyone that being committed to someone doesn't mean accepting abuse?

I love the importance our communities place on family, relationships and celebrating one another. But two things can be true: we can value marriage AND question the expectations that sometimes accompany it.

Especially when those expectations make it harder for someone to recognize abuse, speak about their experiences or seek support.

This Domestic Violence Awareness Month, I want us to think about the relationship lessons we're passing down.

Let's spend as much time teaching healthy relationships as we do celebrating marriage.

What relationship lesson do you wish you'd learned growing up?

If you or someone you know is experiencing relationship abuse, support is available through the National Domestic Violence Hotline: 800-799-SAFE (7233) or thehotline.org. If your device use is monitored, consider accessing resources from a safer device.

You inherited more than their name. 🪔
Pitru Paksha invites us to remember those whose lives made ours possible, not only through grief, but through gratitude, reflection, and responsibility.

Traditionally, this sacred period is observed through practices such as śrāddha, tarpan, prayer, offerings, remembrance, and giving. These rituals preserve relationships, teachings, and traditions carried across generations.

But remembrance can also invite us to ask:
What did our ancestors leave within us?
Their courage. Their faith. Their sacrifices. Their resilience. Their traditions. Their wounds. Their unfinished stories.

And perhaps most importantly: what will we do with what we inherited?

Not everyone has equal access to ancestral knowledge or traditional practice. Migration, displacement, family estrangement, death, assimilation, and generations of lost knowledge can leave gaps. If traditional observance is available to you, learn from your elders, temple, or a knowledgeable priest about the practices of your own lineage.

And where knowledge has been lost, remembrance can still begin with intention.
Say their names. Learn their stories. Preserve a photograph, recipe, language, prayer, song, or tradition. Feed someone. Give in their memory. Practice the values they hoped would survive them.
And sometimes honoring our ancestors also means having the courage to heal what they could not and end what should not be inherited again.

We are not asked to carry everything simply because it came before us.

What deserves to continue?
What deserves to heal?
What deserves to end with you?
May we remember with gratitude, discern with wisdom, and carry forward with intention.

Remember. Honor. Continue. 🪔

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. 💜

Abuse is not only physical violence. It can look like intimidation, isolation, coercive control, financial control, humiliation, monitoring, sexual pressure, punishment, threats, or repeated conflict that leaves one person constantly adjusting themselves to keep another person calm. Sometimes the most damaging message does not come only from the abusive person. It comes from communities that ask survivors to keep the peace, protect a family’s reputation, forgive prematurely, remain agreeable, or explain what they did to “cause” someone else’s violence.

I reject that.

As a Shakti Hindu practitioner whose spirituality is influenced by traditions that understand divine feminine power as creative, protective, transformative, and embodied, I do not believe spirituality requires silence or self-abandonment. Shakti is not silence.
Dharma is not enduring harm so everyone else can remain comfortable. Peace that requires a survivor to disappear is not peace.

Healing may mean leaving.
Healing may mean rebuilding financially.
Healing may mean returning to friends.
Healing may mean therapy.
Healing may mean prayer, ritual, art, movement, advocacy, rest, boundaries, laughter, pleasure, or simply learning that your life belongs to you again.
And healing should never depend on whether someone is considered the “perfect” survivor.

Survivors deserve healing.
They deserve professionalism.
They deserve ethical support, accountability, informed consent, dignity, and systems that do not punish people for speaking the truth.

Control is not care.
Isolation is not love.
Survival is not the end of your story.

💜 May survivors have the freedom to leave.
💜 May they have the resources to rebuild.
💜 May they be believed without having to become agreeable.
💜 And may we stop protecting peace, reputation, culture, family, or institutions at the expense of the person who was harmed.

Balance doesn’t mean standing still. 🌕🔥
This Full Moon asks us to look honestly at what we have carried, what we have survived, and what we have outgrown.

Sometimes healing is peaceful. Sometimes healing is finally admitting that you are angry about the years you were asked to shrink, wait, stay quiet, or make yourself easier for other people to understand.
But anger does not have to become a permanent home. It can become information. It can show us where a boundary was crossed, where a dream was neglected, and where it is finally time to choose differently.

This season, honor the harvest: the education, wisdom, discipline, community, opportunities, and courage you fought to cultivate. Grieve what did not grow with you. Give thanks for what did. And keep moving toward the life that has been calling you.
You do not have to erase where you came from to decide where you are going.

🌕 What are you ready to stop carrying into your next season?

🍂 Welcome, Autumn.

Nature does not apologize for changing.
Trees do not chase the leaves that have completed their season. They release them...not because those leaves were meaningless, but because holding everything forever would leave no room for what comes next.

We can honor what carried us without carrying it forever.

This season, release the habit that has become too heavy. Reconsider the boundary you've been afraid to make. Rest without treating rest as something you have to earn. Allow yourself to become unfamiliar to people who only knew an older version of you.
Not everything we release was bad. Sometimes it was simply meant for another season.

May this autumn bring discernment about what deserves to remain, gratitude for what has passed, and courage for whatever is becoming. 🍁✨

🌕 What are your words creating?

Healing does not always mean destroying the parts of ourselves we struggle with. Sometimes healing means learning what those parts are trying to tell us, and giving that energy somewhere safer to go.

Let anger move your body.
Let anxiety help you prepare instead of panic.
Let jealousy reveal what you desire.
Let resentment teach you where a boundary belongs.
Let heartbreak become art.
Let regret make you gentler.
Let loneliness teach you how to sit lovingly with yourself.
Let pain become wisdom that may someday help someone else.

As we move toward the Full Moon during Suicide Prevention Month, remember: you do not have to become your darkest thought, and you do not have to fight every difficult part of yourself into silence.

Listen. Redirect. Create. Rest. Ask for help. Begin again.

Your words shape your inner world. Speak to yourself like someone whose life is worth protecting. 🌕🕉️

You are allowed to stay.

Your mental health matters.

This National Suicide Prevention Month, remember that asking for help is a sign of strength. If you or someone you know is struggling, help is available.
