Day #10.. winding down.. five mile hike crossing border into Austria.. mostly forest, a few cows and little bit of up /down -trekking poles useful. Hiked past this outdoor kindergarten, which was worth a stop and watch. Made our way to Feldkirch, Austria for lunch where I stopped to admire the flower market in the square. Back on bus for two hour drive to Innsbruck, where we said goodbye to Mauro, our driver who looked just like Stanley Tucci! Raining here.. quick bite and the packing process starts. Discovered I didn’t have the bus ticket needed to get myself to Munich on Sat
Rut-row!!! Really!! Got it figured out, ticket bought and good to go!

Day #7. “Challenge day”. We named it “verbotten” day here Davos, Switzerland. A personal thanks again to ALL of the trainers that have ever worked with me. Not one question that I wouldn’t be here without their guidance. 8 hard miles in five hours. It did not go as the itinerary said. Seems that construction on the trail stopped us from initial plan, but we didn’t really know that till we were four miles in/up/ steep narrow paths/ whew. But, these cows at a resting spot were fun as they snuggled and walked right up to our back packs .. looking for a snack. Fast forward ( in a slow way) to end of hike.. I was just poking around the gardens with another couple when we heard this strange sound, almost like a car alarm and cow bells so close by. The sound was the “ Shepards”, a young farming family, “ moving the cows down the mountain”, which happens one day ( today!) a year. A mom and two littles, would guess the farmer’s family were at the end of the cow procession in an ATV! Things I’ll never see again.. Our hotel, the Schatzalp Snow Mountain Resort was a TB “sanitarium” from 1900-1953. A fascinating story. Hardest hiking day now behind us. by @carensquitieri

Day #6. Honestly, a lot! Crossed the Italy/Swiss border on foot. Got to 8200 feet.UP and DOWN about five miles. Drove to Cable Car and headed up to Diavolezza to walk around Swiss Alp Glacier and mountain views. Lunched up near the Glacier ended with this treat ! Engadiner Nusstone.. so delicious! Next, another drive to Lavin where we got on the Train Ferry, which took us through the base of the mountain to Davos. Dinner at 7pm. Could have skipped the whole event, but the group was fun ! Weather was absolutely splendid!

Day 5.Livigno, Italy. Ski town, visited by mountain bikers and hikers off season. Morning looked to be very foggy for hiking, but then, we passed through the cloud on the gondola ride and everything changed! A glorious morning for a hike. First1350 feet up, then 3000 feet down…part in forest, some on narrow path, a portion along the hypnotic sound of running river water over rocks. The mountain restaurant truly is farm to table with the sounds of the cow bells clanging during our cheese plate lunch.. you know I found laundry .. and this group of humans on the mountain.. Quiet, easy dinner in Livigno of a bowl of soup.. seven miles of hoofing took about four hours . Great hike ! by @carensquitieri

Day 2. Drove to Bormio, stopping at Capo di Ponte, World Heritage site to view prehistory carvings(fascinating)and 11th century “monastery” . More wow. The large fresco is dated on the piece, 1497. The smaller one, a fresco under another fresco. The hands were so beautiful! Who knew the mermaid tails on the columns were associated with mythological devils? Love the yellow and pink flowers that were blooming together. Seems that Wednesday is not laundry day in this part of Italy! Saw a few displays, but this is the only captured pic.. everyone got our robes and slippers on to head to the thermal spring open-air pool. Worth the trouble. Dinner at the “new” hotel. Ha. Simple, but delicious. by @carensquitieri
