There are books you love and there are books that stay with you long after you’ve finished them.

The Invisible Life of Addie La Rue is definitely one of mine. Addie is a young woman who makes a deal with the gods after dark in exchange for immortality, but she soon discovers the devastating cost: every person she meets is destined to forget her.

The premise of this book, the atmosphere and Schwab’s lyrical writing are hard to forget! 🖤💫

What’s a book you wish you could read again for the first time?

Tell me I’m not the only one whose idea of a perfect Sunday involves a good book and a cuppa (or a glass of vino) 🍂📖

In Gothic fiction, the monster isn’t always the creature lurking in the shadows.

We forget that Rochester, the brooding love interest in Jane Eyre, kept his first wife locked away in an attic. Or that Maxim de Winter, the charming, mysterious husband in Rebecca, is hiding something far more sinister than we’re initially led to believe.

That’s one of the things I love about Gothic fiction. It’s unsettling because the real horror isn’t always supernatural.

What other books blur the line between hero and monster? And does Gothic fiction judge its male and female monsters differently? 🖤

Grace by Paul Lynch

This was my favourite September read and it broke my heart 💔. Set during the Great Hunger, it follows Grace, a young teenager who is sent from home by her mother to survive alone as a boy. Hair shorn and dressed in her late father’s clothes, we follow Grace across famine-ravaged Ireland. As expected, this is a bleak read. But Lynch’s prose is so beautiful with dreamlike poetry that meant I savoured every word.

The devastated landscape is a setting itself and described in such a way that at times I felt as though I’d been catapulted into Grace’s freezing cold world. And yet somehow, among all the darkness there is humour that had me laughing out loud.

A thought-provoking read that I still can’t get out of my head and will stay with me for a long time to come. A story about grief, survival and childhood being snatched far too soon.

Just one of my favourite quotes: What is happening now is no different from the end of the world, the only difference is that the rich can continue to live without affliction. The gods have abandoned us, that’s how I figure it. It is time to be your own god.

I’ve heard so many good things about these three books and they all sound so different.

Which one should I bump to the top of my TBR?

A Saturday afternoon spent buying a new book, sitting in the sunshine and pretending I might somehow read 600+ pages before the Netflix adaptation arrives on Thursday.

I sincerely doubt that’s going to happen 😂. Anyway, this is one to take my time with. The first few pages are so beautiful I already want to savour every single word.

Five Gothic books for darker nights 🖤

When autumn arrives, this is all I want to read. Give me strange houses, unsettling atmospheres, complicated women and of course all of the darkness under the surface.

These five all do gothic very differently. From dreamy and melancholic to dark, sensual and unsettling. And they all have important themes which is probably why I love the genre so much.

What’s the best Gothic book you’ve read? I’m always looking for recommendations.

Save this one for your autumn TBR 🍂

Happy Sunday, bookish besties 👯

Having adored The Shepherd King duology, I completely expected to love this book and yet again, Rachel Gillig can do no wrong in my eyes. It’s exactly what I craved: a gothic world to get completely lost in, filled with diviners, omens, gargoyles and knights.

Now I just need to take my time with it because I really don’t want it to end 🖤
