Did I wake up at 3am to get *my* run in with enough time to make it to the family race and.not be rushed going to a family visit after? Yes. Yes I did.

Now pardon me while I go nap.

And I’m not talking about “run slower than you think you need to”. I already know that one and it doesn’t compute 🤣.

Give me your obscure, highly personal, learned-from-experience, insider tips.

Friendly reminder: don’t skip strength days, even when you’d rather be on the trail.

Take it from me and The (not so) Great 2025 Hamstring Injury: skipping strength to spend more time running was a bold strategy … one that resulted in significantly less running. 🙃

Build the strength. Protect the trail time.

Part 2: In which I survive coming nowhere close to being eaten by a bear

In this installment, we discuss bears (again). We lose the trail. We descend using a technique called “falling.”

Seriously tho, I recently read a story of a woman whose 3 friends beat a mountain lion for 14 minutes while it attacked her until it finally gave up. I thought of that story while I was up on that mtn, all alone, not having seen another soul for the past 3 hours,. 🫪😵‍💫🐻

Part 1: In which I hyper fixate on my intrusive thoughts

Please enjoy this sampling of Saturday’s Death Mountain internal monologue, generously made external for absolutely no one’s benefit.

Part 2 rolling right behind this one bc I don’t play games like that. 😂

I mean, I *did* ask for hills.

Please excuse my pace, I was fighting for my life out there. Pretty sure I left my dignity back at mile 4.

Ok hear me out. The strength training part of race prep is like the ‘chopping vegetables’ part of following a recipe.

You don’t *want* to spend your time dicing and slicing and measuring; but you need to in order to make the recipe work.

I’ve got a finish line on the menu, and I hope to cross it feeling strong. So this is me … chopping veggies.

Perspective is a funny thing.

It’s easy to lose track of your progress when you’re only looking ahead …

#training #perspective #goals #ultra #celebrate

There was a version of me who had just finished her first marathon - well ahead of her finish goal, and a BQ!

But instead of celebrating the achievement, she told herself, “yeah, but other runners are out there doing ultras!”

There was the version of me who ran 145 miles up and down Mt Kili and across Tanzania.

But instead of celebrating, she told herself, “Yeah but it took you 5 days. Other runners are out there doing it in one!”

There exists the version of me now who is training for her first stand-alone 50 and 100k.

And instead of getting excited about the achievement that waits ahead, I find myself already moving the goal post and thinking about what those races AREN’T.

It’s silly.

On the trail a few weeks back, someone called out as I passed them, “I wish I could do what you’re doing!”

It was a reminder to zoom out and look back at all of the goals I’ve accomplished that a past version of me never even dared to dream.

There will always be big goals ahead, but the ones I’ve already completed are the steps that line the path to the next one.

Don’t forget to celebrate! by @careyruns

Had a three-minute meeting with Nancy in the hallway at 4 a.m. She made a compelling case for going back to bed.

Unfortunately for Nancy, we have goals, and showing up begrudgingly is better than not showing up at all. 😂💪🏼🏃🏼‍♀️

Lap 3 was a doozy.
If you make it all the way through this, you’re a real one 😂

Drop your fave trail shoe in the comments. Big lugs, mud shedding, NON-waterproof … preferably don’t turn into skis when faced with actual mud. I already have a pair of Salomon’s arriving soon per the recommendation of @jessicafussey ☺️, but open to options!

I did eventually make it up that hill 🫠
But note to self - buy trail shoes with bigger lugs.
