National Day for Truth and Reconciliation

Today, we honour residential school Survivors, remember the children who never returned home and acknowledge the lasting impact of residential schools on Indigenous families and communities.

Truth and reconciliation also require us to examine our own responsibilities.

As an organization advocating for visual artists, we recognize that meaningful support for Indigenous artists must extend beyond statements of solidarity. It requires sustained relationships, active engagement, respect for cultural protocols and advocacy for artists' rights and fair compensation.

CARFAC National's Indigenous Protocols for the Visual Arts provides an important foundation for this work. Our responsibility is to ensure these principles are reflected in our everyday practices, including how we engage with Indigenous artists within our own membership.

Reconciliation is not a single day of recognition. It is an ongoing responsibility that must be reflected in our actions.

Today, we remember. Every day, we have work to do.

Visit the Resources & Links page on the CARFAC Alberta website to explore Indigenous Protocols for the Visual Arts.
