FRAMED Season IV Featured Artist: Nicholas E. Gully

Linear Minimalism.

Nicholas E. Gully is a self-taught fine artist born out of Chicago and building his practice across the DFW. He came up through film photography, monochromatic and disciplined, and earned his first audience there before galleries came calling. His international debut came in 2022 in Rome. In 2024 he became one of six awardees of the Arch and Anne Giles Kimbrough Fund from the Dallas Museum of Art. His work has since shown at the DMA in “Another Inside Job” and “Drawn Together,” and with us in “NOWNESS, Studies in Scale.”

For FRAMED he brings the “Linear Minimal” tetralogy. “Survey,” “Overview,” “Alignment,” and “Pinnacle,” all 2026. Four acrylic-based works built on contrast, shading, and abstraction, where line and pattern carry the narrative. You can begin anywhere in the series and it holds. That was intentional. He describes the tetralogy as his own contribution toward Black leadership, contemporary collaboration, and artistic coaching, and calls them living works with a shared interest in pioneering Black fine art.

Alongside them is “Clouded Desire” (2026), where two blues wisp across an unbounded sky and a circle in the foreground is quietly interrupted by thin ink lines. He reads that interruption as the hesitation of an early artist not yet ready to commit, and the aimlessness that comes without accountability.

What we love most is his closing thought. That anyone, at any stage in our fine arts culture, can take a stride forward beyond the white walls that border us. That is FRAMED.
