Y’all… your girl is 1st Runner-Up at Miss Adams Morgan 38! 👑⭐️🤠 And what a night it was!

I love that these moments capture some of the people who helped get Moka to that stage: my drag mother Terry Yaki, my sister and niece who came all the way from Texas, my dear friend Carlos who was clutch in the final stretch, Evita Peroxide for the face and getting me together, Mariachi AyAyAy, and my fabulous chambelán** Barbitas**. 🌹

It takes a village, and I’m so lucky to have this one. ❤️

And this is just the beginning of the photo dump — more thank yous, lewks, performances, and Moka moments to come! 👑✨

1st Runner Up. Thank you everyone. ❤️ by @carino1986

This photo takes me back to Chicago in 1998, when Dolores Huerta and I were both speakers at the LLEGO conference gala — a gathering of Latino LGBTQ leaders, activists and allies whose work helped shape a generation.

I was young, still finding my own voice in advocacy, and sharing that stage with Dolores was something I understood was special even then. Nearly 30 years later, I understand it even more.

Her life was a testament to the power of organizing, persistence and believing that ordinary people can change the world. She fought for farmworkers, women, immigrants, Latinos and so many communities too often pushed to the margins — and she reminded us that our struggles and our liberation are connected.

I’m grateful I had the chance to cross paths with a giant then, and the many times since that I had an opportunity to bump into her on campaigns and events.

Rest in power, Dolores Huerta. Your work continues through all of us who still believe: ¡Sí, se puede! ❤️✊🏽 by @carino1986

10 years ago today, my dad left this physical world. Not a day goes by that I don’t think of him, miss him, and wish I could have just one more conversation with him.

I carry you with me every day, Papi. ❤️ by @carino1986

28 years later. Full circle. 💜

In 1998, I came to Washington as a CHCI intern, a gay Mexican kid from the South Side of Chicago trying to figure out where I fit.

This week, I stood on stage at the 48th Annual CHCI Gala to help welcome and introduce the newest class of CHCI interns and fellows.

That one hit differently.

The rest of the night was pure familia: Betas & Gammas, fellow CHCI alumni, a member of my intern class, interns I once supervised, longtime friends, and a few icons along the way, including my former boss Barbara Lee as well as Reps. Maxine Waters, Chuy Garcia and Adelita Grijalva. And yes, Maxwell Frost on the drums at the after-party. 🥁🔥

28 years of friendship, service, mentorship and comunidad.

CHCI opened a door for me. Now we keep holding it open for whoever comes next. 💜
