This race will break you down and build you up again.

It will change your life.

Explain to me how one can feel loved the whole way by people you’ve never met before.

The uncertainty on the start line of what the day ahead holds. The hurt. The emotions. The unity. The Ubuntu. The why.

Somewhere between Durban and Pietermaritzburg I was reminded that the world is far kinder than we often give it credit for. No one was running alone, just 20349 people carrying eachother forward.

It’s hard. You give everything. It takes everything. And yet somehow it gives you something back that feels even bigger than what you’ve lost.

“Today is about you” - words you’ll hear as a Comrades novice from Comrades vets. Except the day wasn’t about me but about way more than anyone will ever understand unless you’ve stood on that start line.

Abelang I owe you for getting me through the last 5kms. “Lord thank you for getting Carissa this far, I will make sure she doesn’t finish alone”. And you kept your promise. Thank you for carrying me home.

People see the finish line but they don’t see the village behind it. Without a solid support system a race like this is impossible. You guys know who you are and you mean the world to me.

@terrence_pettersson thank you for getting me to the start line. In a race like this just getting to the start is an achievement alone. The comrades grind is no joke and I’m blessed to have a friend that is still friends with me even after some of the hardest training runs.

@lisaschubert09 inspires me everyday and I’m blessed to say I got to conquer this with my momsy.

Comrades I owe you so much. Ska fela moya 💛 by @carissa.schubert
