#Repost: Today, 10/10, we’re playing the inaugural Capitol Hill Porch Fest, & I can’t help feeling nostalgic. Live music, neighbors on their porches, the whole block listening together... it takes me right back to EAVESDROP, the socially distanced concerts we played during COVID.

Flashback: March 27, 2020. We were 1 week into the official shutdown, & my band & I did what any responsible musicians would do: we got together to jam. I hung a wall of plastic sheeting so we could stay distanced, & we started playing. But playing just for ourselves felt selfish, so we stuck some speakers outside. Carla invited the neighbors to sit on their porches & listen.

That was the 1st EAVESDROP. (Okay, technically the neighbors were the ones eavesdropping. We just made it really easy.)

Every week the music floated down the street for almost a year. After every set, I’d step into the yard to say thank you & introduce the band & team. Neighbors who used to just nod over the recycling bins started waving, then talking, then showing up w/ wine & cookies their kids had baked. We couldn’t be close, but the music gave us a reason to be together.
Then EAVESDROP outgrew our block. We streamed & took over IG pages, including DJ D-Nice’s Club Quarantine. We played virtual private events & concerts for companies, museums & theaters, including the Kennedy Center & Strathmore. Then we pitched clubs & played Blues Alley & the Blue Note. We even did a series of shows in Yellow Springs, OH.

Swipe to see how it started: the 1st flyers, the band, and the amazing team who made every show happen. None of it was possible without them or without you.

Now, 6½ years later, some of those neighbors have moved, but plenty are still here, & we’re still close. They know what those days of music meant to this block. Many new folks don’t, & I hope Porch Fest helps them feel it too.

#CapitolHillPorchFest: 153 bands, 51 porches, plus 4 hours to finally learn your neighbors’ names instead of just their dogs’ names.

My footprints in the sand turned into footsteps in the clouds.

@fredyonnet captured these moments in Jamaica and, of course, when it came to finding the right vibe, I thought of our friend @grampsmorgan. Sometimes the universe just aligns the music, the moment, and the movement into something beautiful. by @carla_sims

What an incredible day at the Forbes Iconoclast Summit in NYC last Thursday!

The energy was absolutely electric - surrounded by visionaries, disruptors, and changemakers who are literally reshaping industries and pushing boundaries.
It was great reconnecting with old friends and meeting new ones.
Special shoutout to @scottlazaerson for being the ultimate connector!

Yesterday was my birthday and honestly? I wasn’t feeling it at first. While I typically like to spend my birthday outside of the rhelm of reality, this year, I had zero plans and some seriously mixed emotions about this whole getting-older thing. You know that feeling when you’re not sure if you want to celebrate or hibernate? Yeah, that was me.

But then last week while out walking with a friend, @nicvenable, we were talking about weekend plans and she mentioned having a villa reserved in Jamaica left over from COVID that she and some friends needed to use or lose. Next thing I know, we were invited to join her and I was booking plane tickets.

We decided to come a couple days early and during this time of reflection I realized that sometimes our resistance to celebrating ourselves comes from waiting for life to feel ā€œsettledā€ or ā€œcomplete.ā€ With all the uncertainty swirling around these days, I just wanted to be still - at home. I was holding back my joy because this year felt messy and uncertain. But maybe that’s exactly when we need celebration most – not when everything’s perfect, but when we need reminding that we’re still here, still growing, still worth celebrating.

Jamaica is giving me something I didn’t know I needed: the chance to be still in warm, exotic beauty instead of just being still in worry. Sometimes peace looks different than we expect.

All those birthday calls and messages yesterday? A blessed reminder that this journey is so much sweeter because of the people in it.

So here’s to finding our version of stillness, embracing celebration even when life feels uncertain, and trusting that sometimes the peace we’re seeking is just a ā€œyesā€ away. by @carla_sims

Birthdays make you look back, right? So here are some photos spanning the years - a visual reminder that every version of me has been figuring it out as I go, and somehow it’s all led to moments like this. #happybelatedbirthday to me. 5.24 Baby Carla by @carla_sims
