Reflection below 👇🏼 Two days ago, I graduated from my Master’s in Multilingualism and Language Planning and Policy after a year full of hard work, effort, stress and sacrifice. Since, apparently, Dutch graduations only include speeches from professors to their students - and not the other way around as in Spain - today I wanted to share with you some words I wrote a few months ago, reflecting on what this master’s means to me, as… This master's is more than just a paper or a diploma. For me, it's a celebration of life and accomplished dreams. Last year, I decided to change my life as it wasn't bringing me any fulfilment or happiness and decided to return to who I am, to my dreams and to turn them into feasible goals, making them a reality. That's why I applied for this master's as I had been dreaming to study it since I had finished my bachelor's two year before, as it is the path to my ultimate objective of becoming a language and culture policymaker or advisor. Therefore, I was thrilled that I had finally had the courage to go back to my purpose and was able to make it happen. However, once I had been accepted and everything was sorted out, I started experiencing an intense pain that prevented me from my daily life. I went to the hospital and after several tests, doctors told me I could have cancer. In that moment, I saw all my life going away and with that, a instant fear of not being able to achieve my dreams, among them studying the master's I had craved for so long. After the option of cancer had been ruled out, doctors believed I could have a serious disease, like an autoimmune one, leading to several medical tests throughout three more months, along the coexistence of physical pain. Nevertheless, one day the pain started to fade away and I was able to come back to my routine. In that moment I knew I would do my master's no matter what. Therefore, I moved to Leeuwarden and it wasn't, in fact, until I was there that my surgeon phoned me to give me the news I was free of any disease, I was healthy! In that moment I became so happy and grateful, and reaffirmed once more that I wouldn't leave the Netherlands... [last part in the comments ⬇️] by @carlagclar

Reflection 👇🏻 This year has been one of the hardest but also one of the best. It has been a year full of contrasts, rollercoasters, changes, challenges, uncertainty and pain, but also new adventures, unforgettable experiences, courage, strength, growth, laughter, fulfilment and happiness. It was a year where I went through extreme pain for three months that kept me from living a normal daily life. The doctors believed I could first have cancer and then a serious illness. It was also a year filled with pain caused by family problems, heartbreak, negativity in the workplace and exhaustion (both physical and mental) due to the non-stop, stressful rhythm of university. However, it was also the year I faced situations filled with uncertainty, stress or pain for the first time without experiencing anxiety attacks or paralysing fear. I also learned that any event or thing has the meaning we decide to give it and that, for this reason, most of our problems or worries are actually irrelevant since other things, such as health, ourselves and our loved ones, are what truly matter instead. Likewise, I had the courage to overcome all my fears so far and heal old wounds, which led me to take my first solo trip, go to a restaurant alone, walk down the street or take public transport without listening to music, sing in public, prepare and lead meetings, present at a conference, share reflections, affirmations and videos of myself speaking or singing on Instagram, and attend craft workshops with strangers in a new language (Dutch), which I continue to learn and use in my daily life, even with my beginner-level speech full of mistakes. Also, I left a job and a city where I didn’t feel fulfilled or happy, no matter how stable they were and the amazing people I got to know there, and instead pursued my dream and goal of studying the master’s in Multilingualism and Language Policy that I fell in love with when I discovered it two years ago. Moreover, I formed and strengthened true friendships and reconnected with old ones by communicating and resolving past misunderstandings. There’s nothing like... ⬇️ by @carlagclar
