One year down, a lifetime to go.

Happy one year, my love. I never knew it could be this good, that one person could make me feel so loved, supported, and understood. No one makes me feel more like myself and I couldn’t have asked for a better partner.

I can’t wait to see what the future holds for us. Every day is a dream.

(Pls note our actual anniversary is 4/23 but I didn’t have IG on my phone at the time ty) by @carlin.e.f

ARTIST SPOTLIGHT

We would like to introduce you to Carlin Flores, one of the participating artist in the upcoming April group exhibition 'Viscera'!

Carlin Flores specializes in mixed media, multi-disciplinary work inspired by science fiction, storytelling, and world-building. Traditional medias of ink, colored pencil, and acrylic blend with fabrication and cosmetic-grade pigments. Carlin’s process is driven by mythologizing her internal narratives to better understand herself and her world.

Born and raised in Texas, Carlin received both her BA and MFA from the University of Texas at Dallas. She finds inspiration in nature, speculative fiction media, and pop culture.

Statement from the artist:
Through mythologizing my personal narratives, I better understand myself and the stories that make up my life. Humans traffic in a currency of fables, the stories we tell binding us to other humans, groups, and histories. As a young person, fiction was my escape. Now, fiction recontextualizes the stories that make up my being, empowering me to accept that which I cannot change, and celebrate my life as a whole.

I begin with a memory (every memory is a story retold) and construct the fantastical narrative surrounding this moment. These memories represent specific happenings, feelings, relationships, and stretches of time. I render in layers of varied intuition and intention until I’ve captured something I can share with others, rather than carry alone.

The opening reception for 'Viscera' will take place Saturday, April 20 from 7-10pm. An open viewing will be held Sunday, April 21 from 12-2pm. by @carlin.e.f

Year in review.

It might be cooler to not explain any of these but I live for context so let’s get into it.

#1: My two kitties when we were snuggling during the January freeze. It was my first winter with my second cat Minerva, and she was only a couple months old.

#2: My Grammy, showing one of the dozens of quilts she has made in her lifetime. I got to take one home that day, my first ever Grammy quilt, and it sits in a spot of honor in my home.

#3-5: I went to Albania!!! My parents live there! We’re not Albanian! It’s a whole thing. This trip was a lot packed into a very short span, but it was good to see my family again. I walked a ton, ate a ton, and took pictures of OSHA violations. I have a highlight of the trip on my profile. There’s too much to say to put it here- it’s an experience unlike any other

#6: Somewhere in late Spring, I was driving by the college I taught at and saw a huge, dense patch of bluebonnets and thought, “wow I’d love to sit in that- WAIT… I can do that!!” I turned my car around, sat in the flowers on the side of the road, and took this picture of a bee. It was simple, but it was everything. It was when I really started to feel better, I think.

(The Summer is a blur. Idek)

#7: Going to Sleeptoken in September. I’ve been in love with this group for several years, so getting to finally see them live was magical. I was rained on, cold, by myself because it was so crowded I couldn’t find my friends, and I would do it all over in a heartbeat to hear them play V0re again.

#8: Sandy Skoglund’s ‘Veronica,’ made of cheese doodles, at the McNay in San Antonio. I took a day trip with my friend to see some art and eat pastries. I need to take more day trips with friends. Hit me up in 2024.

#9: Baby’s first solar eclipse. Self explanatory.

#10: The last full moon of the year. I kept re-writing this last little blurb. All I can
say is, I’m doing infinitely better than I was at the end of 2022. I owe it to my friends, support system, and myself. Time to do it all over again. by @carlin.e.f

The short version is, I feel better.

The long version is, it’s taken a year and change. When I left my studio space after leaving a job I’d worked for two years after cutting contact with a family member after saying goodbye to many other family members moving overseas… I had nothing left to give creatively.

I contented myself with adjusting to every new thing, focusing on my mental and physical health, because my finances and lack of health insurance meant I couldn’t afford the medication I needed, and my mental health made it difficult to take the meds I DID have when I should.

I am now seeing a specialist that will hopefully get my health back to 100%, and I’m steadily working towards my goals in the gym. I’m a little better every day, but more importantly: I am awake.

I said to a friend a few months ago, “it feels like I am just now having the space to wake up, and breathe, and begin to think about who I am and what I want.” At 27. Existing in a 24/7 trauma response for 20+ years will do this to a person.

When I had a whisper of a creative urge the other day, I pounced on it. And you get this little video. I hope the whispers keep finding me, until they are shouts and roars. And I hope I can make things not out of desperation to be heard or seen, but because I have something to say and share with the world, whatever that may be. by @carlin.e.f
